Raymond Winger - Member
A native New Zealander, Dr. Winger graduated with a BTech (foodtech) from Massey University then attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison on a Fulbright-Hays Scholarship in 1972 and completed his M.S. and PhD degrees. Winger was active in the Student Division of IFT for 5 years and instigated the Graduate Paper Competition. Back in New Zealand (NZ), he was Research Scientist for Meat Industry Research Institute, then Technical Manager in NZ’s leading Health Food Company. As General Manager of an International agri-food consulting company he travelled widely in Asia, and saw firsthand how different the food industry’s requirements are in Vietnam, India, Thailand and other countries. Returning to Massey University in 1990 as Chair in Food Technology, Dr. Winger performed several roles, including Head of Department, Executive Director of a Food Technology Research Centre and is currently on the University’s Board of Directors. He has supervised PhD students in Thailand as well as New Zealand, and is currently spearheading a universities collaboration with Brazil. He has a strong network throughout Europe, particularly with Universities and has participated in a collaborative project funded by the European Commission. Outside the university, Winger has been a NZ government appointee to the Board of Food Standards Australia-NZ (equivalent to USFDA). He has also served on the Executive of the NZ Institute of Food Science and Technology and the Higher Education Committee for IFT, where he was also a member of the IFT Global Strategy Advisory Panel. Dr. Winger was NZ’s delegate to IUFoST during the 1990s.
