James Smith, PhD, CFS
Jim Smith is the Executive Director of BioFoodTech in Prince Edward Island, Canada (www.biofoodtech.ca) and is a professional innovation leader with experience and passion for helping companies commercialize new product ideas to improve their business and develop the economy. During his career, he has had strong involvement with industry and professional organizations.
In addition to being a Commissioner of the IFSCC since 2013, he is also Secretary of Innoventures Canada since 2010, Chair of FOODTECH Canada (Network of Canada’s 12 Food Technology Centres) since 2009 (www.foodtechcanada.ca); UN FAO Expert for food additives on the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) since 2002 (http://www.fao.org/food/food-safety-quality/home-page/en/); Board member, BioTalent Canada since 2008 (www.biotalent.ca). Jim was President of the Canadian Institute of Food Science & Technology (2007-9 - www.cifst.ca). Jim holds a PhD in Food Science from the University of Nottingham, England and an MBA from the University of Strathclyde in his native country of Scotland. Jim is a Fellow of both the UK and Canadian Institutes of Food Science and Technology, a Chartered Scientist and a Certified Food Scientist.
