Program Description

The Department of Food Technology, University of Costa Rica, trains professionals in Food Engineering with knowledge, skills and values that respond to the trends and needs of the national and international agriculture and food sectors, through the integration of teaching, research and extension. The academic program has an orientation towards engineering and its application in food processing, as well as training in food chemistry and microbiology. The curriculum has a strong practical component, with laboratory courses and academic activities conducted in food industries. Requirements for graduation include approval of courses (172 credits), a final graduation project and 300 hours of social communal work. 67% of our graduates find their first position in less than 2 months and 25% between 2 and 6 months. Main work areas include food research and development, food quality and safety assurance and food production management. The academic program is officially accredited by the National System of Accreditation of Higher Education (SINAES), by IFT HERB and IUFoST indicating achievement of quality standards and continuous improvement.
