IFT Member Profile: Tom Nack, Senior Scientist at General Mills

Tom NackSnapshot of my life now:
I work at General Mills in Minneapolis, MN.  I enjoy anything outdoors (hunting, fishing, camping), cooking, and traveling.

Where did I attend college?
Undergraduate: The University of Wisconsin-Madison
Graduate: Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey

How did I get interested in food science?
My mom's side of the family owns and operates a mid-sized meat plant and my dad runs a Piggly Wiggly grocery store. I guess you can say I was destined to go into the food business.

How did IFT/IFTSA help me in my transition from student to professional?
The IFTSA product development competition was the first time I had thought out what actually goes into running a food-related business.  Food technology is one aspect, but once you get out into the working world, you realize the relation of business acumen and being successful in your job.

What are my tips for students who might be entering the workforce for the first time?
Network, network, and network.  Get involved in IFTSA.  I was able to land multiple interviews at companies through IFT contacts, and eventually was hired at General Mills, even though they didn't actively recruit at my university.
