Face-to-Face: Meet Moira McGrath June 2012

Ever wonder if anyone else is facing the same professional challenges as you? Or just looking to connect with some new people in your field? In IFT's Face-to-Face series, we will be introducing you to a different IFT member every month with a fun, insightful Q&A session.

This month meet...

Moira McGrathMoira McGrath, President, OPUS International, Inc.

  1. How did you get your start in the food industry?
Food was always the family’s favorite subject. My grandparents were in the food industry, owning a bakery, a small grocery store, even a luncheonette. My degree is in Hotel Administration from Cornell University, but I began working as a recruiter in the field of food science in 1993. I literally fell into it, as I had no idea there was such an industry.

  2. What do you love about your job?
The people and their integrity regarding doing the right thing when it comes to product development and food safety. It is reassuring to know that there are such good people out there.

  3. What is the biggest challenge that you face in your job?
Finding candidates! There is such a shortage of food scientists, there aren’t enough for all openings that are available.

  4. What have you learned or been exposed to in the past 12 months that has helped you in your job?
Every search that I accept as a recruiter gives me an opportunity to learn something about a particular field. For the last year, I have been working with a large nutritional food manufacturer. Their research department is geared towards using nutrition in ways to help the body heal from a variety of ailments. What I learn from my candidates has been very helpful in not only my ability to recruit for other positions, but also in day to day understanding of nutrition.

  5. How do you see the food industry evolving over the coming year?
I see a lot of emphasis on food safety, as well as a consumer insistence on more "fresh" foods; i.e. farm to table efforts.

  6. Fun Fact: What’s your favorite food?
Having grown up in a Sicilian house, I would have to say Italian.
