Dairy Council of California recently held its 14th Functional Foods Task Force meeting--a group convened annually to track changes in the external environment that affect the dairy industry. Discussions focus on nutrition and dairy research, public policy, regulations and consumer perceptions that impact dairy. This report highlights the key areas discussed as well as strategies to optimize dairy’s positioning in our rapidly-changing environment.

Advances in Commercialization of Nonthermal Processing (http://www.am-fe.ift.org/cms/?pid=1001152) This course is designed to showcase the principles and commercial applications (actual and potential) of diverse Nonthermal Processing technologies, ranging from the well-known (e.g., high pressure) to the emerging to the nascent. Each topic will include the fundamentals of how the technology works (including unique features and/or limitations) and example(s) of current/potential commercial uses. Academicians and food industry professionals will have opportunities to discuss these new technologies with leading experts and find new ways to implement them in the commercial food industry. AUSTRALIA AIMS TO EXPORT 50,000t TO SA – Source: Dairy Industry Newsletter May 22, 2013

Australia wants to increase its dairy exports to Saudi Arabia from 28,000t to 50,000t in the next 5yrs. Saudi companies that have been importing dairy products from Australia include Almarai and Luna. DA believes there is also potential to sell more into retail and foodservice. The Kingdom also imports from the US and Europe. Murray Goulburn has already set up an office in Dubai, a major buyer of Australian dairy products in the GCC, with imports worth more than A$102m.

NESTLÉ INVEST $91m IN PUJAB – Source: Dairy Industry Newsletter May 21, 2013

Nestlé India are planning to invest Rs 500 crore (US$91m) in expanding and modernizing their plant at Moga in Punjab. The company currently have around Rs 9,500 crore ($1.7bn) invested across the country, according to chairman and managing director Antonio Helio Waszyk, and have already put Rs 250 crore ($45m) into the Moja plant. The balance will be invested in technology as well as the upgrade over the next 2yrs. Nestlé are buying milk from 110,000 dairy farmers in the state and are planning to be involved in state proposals to set up a state-of-the-art dairy center comprising a specialist veterinary hospital, model dairy farm, breeding center and a training facility for dairy entrepreneurs, which is likely to be near Moga.

 

SRI LANKA

SRI LANKA AIMS FOR 2020 SELF-SUFFICIENCY – Source: Dairy Industry Newsletter May 20, 2013

MILCO, Sri Lanka's biggest milk producer, say the island will produce 70% of its total milk requirements by 2016 and total self-sufficiency will be achieved a few years later, company chairman Sunil Wickramasinghe said, saving US$400m a year which could be used to improve the dairy farming sector, he said. Around 85,000t of milk products are imported every year, costing about Rs.30bn, he said. The country is now producing over 200,000 liters a day, using imported hybrid cattle from Australia and other countries, expanding the dairy farming network and introducing new breeding methods. Milk production was up 31% in 2012.

PEPSICO/MÜLLER PLANT DUE TO OPEN IN NY – Source: Dairy Industry Newsletter May 22, 2013

The joint venture between PepsiCo and Germany’s Theo Müller will open their Müller Quaker Dairy yogurt plant in Batavia, New York state on June 3. The 350,000 square foot plant will manufacture a variety of yogurt products and initially will employ 150-180 workers.  It will produce approximately 90,000 cups per hour.

BUTTER AND SMP PRICES DOWN AGAIN – Source: Dairy Industry Newsletter May 22, 2013

Butter and SMP prices were marked down again by the Dutch Dairy Board for their official dairy commodity prices. Butter was down €20 (-0.5%) to €3,980/t, dropping below €4,000/t for the first time in 5wks. SMP (food) was down €60 (-1.9%) to €3,080/t and SMP (feed) down €50 (-1.6%) to 2,950/t—again the lowest price for 5wks. WMP and whey powder remained unchanged at €3,730 and €980/t respectively.
