PRICES FALL AGAIN AT GDT AUCTION – Source: Dairy Industry Newsletter May 16, 2013

Prices at Fonterra's online dairy auction have continued to fall, due to increased production arising from more rainfall and the high US dollar. The GlobalDairyTrade's trade-weighted price index fell 2.1%, the second consecutive price drop after a nine-auction run of gains, but commodity values remain about 70% higher than this time last year. The biggest decline was butter, which fell 12.4% to $3,846/t. The next-biggest drop was for BMP, which was down 5.1% to $3,876/t. WMP, the largest category by volume, fell 1.7% to $4,722/t. SMP was down 2.8% to $4,252, and AMF was down 0.2% to $4,598/t. The only category to gain was rennet casein, which was up 3.7% to $10.105/t.

DIN CONFERENCE - LOSS OF QUOTAS 'LARGELY IRRELEVANT' – Source: Dairy Industry Newsletter May 16, 2013

The abolition of milk quotas in 2015 is already largely irrelevant for most member states in light of other developments in global agricultural markets and counterbalancing trends, Tassos Hanniotis, director of economic analysis, perspectives and evaluation directorate in DG Agri said. "Don't expect much to change when they go," he told the DIN conference in London. He said that CAP reform, directing 30% of funding to "green" initiatives, and moving support from producers to the land, together with the doubling of research budgets were more significant. "We have to look for other measures to respond to what is happening," he said. "What we really need is to have the flexibility to define a crisis when it happens, and respond appropriately with the budget we have."

BEL REPORT STAGNATING GROUP SALES – Source: Dairy Industry Newsletter May 17, 2013

MILK GROWTH MORE LIKELY 30%—TEAGASC – Source: Dairy Industry Newsletter May 17, 2013

Growth in milk production in Ireland is more likely to be 30% by 2020 than the targeted 50%, says Thia Hennessy of Teagasc, the Irish Agriculture and Food Development Agency. Speaking at the DIN Conference in London, she said that a 50% increase in milk output by 2020 would be "challenging" without between 1,000 and 4,000 new entrants. Some 230 were allotted milk quota between 2009-11, although applications were significantly oversubscribed.  "As an economist, I am skeptical as to whether it is possible to achieve this 50% growth. But there has been significant investment… which adds credibility to the target." There is significant support for dairy expansion, from government and processors, she said.
