Functional Foods in the "Daily News"

  • AIDP’s KoACT nutritional ingredient is now GRAS (April 6, 2012).  AIDP’s KoACT, a patented chelated compound of calcium and hydrolyzed collagen peptides that has been shown to increase both bone strength and bone mineral density in animal studies in a recent human study to increase biomarkers of bone growth, has received GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) status.
  • FMC Corp. to acquire South Pole Biogroup (October 28, 2011).  FMC Corp. has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire South Pole Biogroup Ltda, a Chilean-based natural color and specialty nutrition ingredients manufacturer.
  • NutraCea, BENEO-Remy sign distribution agreement (October 7, 2011).  NutraCea, producer and marketer of value added products derived from rice bran, and BENEO-Remy, producer of functional food ingredients derived from rice, have announced an exclusive, co-branded sales and marketing agreement.
  • Ashland Inc. completes ISP acquisition (August 23, 2011).  Ashland Inc., a leader in specialty chemical solutions for consumer and industrial markets, has completed its acquisition of privately owned International Specialty Products Inc. (ISP), a global specialty chemical manufacturer of functional ingredients and technologies. 
  • USP proposes new FCC standards for food ingredients (July 5, 2011).  Building on a growing collection of quality standards for ingredients of interest and importance to the food industry—including infant formula ingredients, functional food ingredients, sweeteners, and food colorings—new specifications are being proposed in these categories.
  • Ashland to acquire International Specialty Products (June 3, 2011).  Ashland, Inc. and International Specialty Products, Inc. (ISP) has announced that Ashland has agreed to acquire privately owned ISP, a global specialty chemical manufacturer of functional ingredients and technologies. 
  • Specialty food and beverage sales improve (April 8, 2011).  Sales of specialty food and beverages increased 7.7% in 2010 to reach $70 billion, said the National Association for the Specialty Food Trade (NASFT).
  • PepsiCo receives Russian okay to acquire Wimm-Bill-Dann (January 28, 2011).  PepsiCo Inc. has announced that the Federal Antimonopoly Service of the Russian Federation has issued approvals for PepsiCo’s previously announced acquisition of Wimm-Bill-Dann Foods OJSC, Russia’s leading branded food and beverage company. 
  • Frutarom acquires Riber’s savory flavor business (January 4, 2011).  Frutarom has signed an agreement to acquire Rieber Industrial Spices Savory activity and its fixed assets of Rieber & Son ASA from Norway, at the amount of approximately $4.2 million.
  • EFSA rules probiotic health claims unproven (October 22, 2010).  According to the Guardian, the food industry’s probiotics sector was called into question today by a new European ruling that its health claims are unsupported by sound science.
  • Stratum Nutrition acquires IQF Group (July 13, 2010).  Stratum Nutrition announced that its parent company, Novus International, Inc. has acquired the IQF Group, a Spanish producer of nutritional additives for the feed industry, as well as a range of carotenoids for foods, beverages, and supplements.
  • Heart Health Product Innovation on the Rise (June 16, 2010).  Despite ongoing regulatory issues with regard to health claims, the positioning of food and drink products on a heart health platform appears to be continuing unabated.
  • Gut health products showing steady growth (April 28, 2010).  Despite a number of adverse influences, including the economic downturn, consumer confusion over the range of products and ingredients and their benefits, and difficulties over claims validation in Europe, interest in food and drinks carrying gut or digestive health claims appears to be continuing unabated, at least as far as food and drinks companies are concerned.
  • Bioenergy Life Science unveils new Formulation Center (March 8, 2010).  Bioenergy Life Sciences, Inc., Minneapolis, MN, launched its new RIBOSE Formulation Center to help food, beverage, and supplement manufacturers with RIBOSE product concept development, supplement formulations, functional food prototypes, and marketing information.
  • Functional food growth slows (June 29, 2009).  Consumers are more proactive about their health, which spurred the US retail market for functional foods and beverages to a 6% gain with sales totaling about $30.7 billion in 2008. 
  • Proliant obtains GRAS status for ImmounoLin (March 12, 2009).  Proliant Health and Biologicals has announced self-affirmed GRAS status for the company’s proprietary, trademarked ingredient ImmunoLin (bovine globulin concentrate). 
  • DSM’s tensVida wins award (March 11, 2009).  DSM has announced that its blood pressure management ingredient, tensVida (formerly known as TensGuard) has won the NutrAward for the most innovative, evidence-based health and nutrition ingredient at Nutracon. 
  • Beneo-Group to host carbohydrate symposium (March 17, 2008).  The Beneo-Group will be hosting its first European Scientific Symposium about the impact of functional carbohydrates on energy metabolism at the Sodehotel, Brussels on April 11, 2008.
  • Palatinit of America changes name (March 5, 2008).  Palatinit of America has officially become Benco-Palatinit Inc.  According to a company press release, the company is moving into opportunities in the functional food industry as part of the new Beno Functional Food Group. 
  • Fortitech entering African market (January 11, 2008).  Fortitech, Inc., a processor of custom nutrient premixes for the food, beverage, and pharmaceutical industries, is increasing its focus on the emerging functional foods and beverage market in Africa.
