Eligibility and Application Requirements

Feeding Tomorrow provides academic scholarships to students pursuing degrees in the field of food science. To see if you are eligible for a Feeding Tomorrow Scholarship, please refer to the eligibility requirements below.

Freshman Scholarships

Freshman scholarships are awarded to high school seniors entering college for the first time and are enrolled in an IFT-approved undergraduate food science program

Eligibility:

Application:
The freshman scholarship application (PDF) must be typed in English and include the following documents:

  1. One recommendation letter from a teacher, employer, or mentor emailed directly from the recommender to scholarship_fr@ift.org with the subject line: “Applicant’s Name: Recommendation.”
  2. An academic high school transcript that includes a cumulative summary of the student’s GPA, SAT, and/or ACT scores emailed to scholarship_fr@ift.org or mailed to:

  3. The freshman scholarship application (PDF), must be submitted electronically (as a PDF) to scholarship_fr@ift.org with the subject line: “Applicant’s Name: Application.”

Please note: All applications must be submitted electronically. Unsolicited materials will disqualify the applicant, and mailed applications will be rejected. Only an applicant’s transcript may be mailed.

Deadline:
The freshman scholarship application, recommendation letter, and transcript must be received by 4:00 PM EDT on May 13, 2013. Applications received after the deadline will not be accepted.

Policies
A students who will be enrolled as a freshman in the Fall of 2013, studying within an IFT-approved food science program at the time the scholarship becomes effective, is eligible.

A scholarship award winner that withdraws from school, graduates early or substantially alters his/her scholastic program during tenure of the scholarship award must forfeit his/her scholarship. The balance of the scholarship will revert to the general fund of Feeding Tomorrow or will be returned to the donor (at the donor’s discretion).

Applications in which the grades have not been converted to the A=4.0 system will be disqualified. 

There are no scholarship renewals. Current scholarship holders must reapply the following year on the same basis as new applicants. 

Undergraduate Scholarships

Undergraduate scholarships are awarded to sophomore, junior, and senior students pursuing an education in food science leading to a BS degree in and IFT-approved undergraduate food science program.

Eligibility:

  • Applicant must be enrolled as a full-time sophomore, junior, or senior student pursuing an undergraduate degree in an IFT-approved undergraduate food science program in Fall 2013.
    • You must apply for the appropriate grade level for the 2013-2014 academic year (i.e., if you are a current sophomore, you must apply for a junior scholarship).
    • Current seniors who will be graduating in the 2013-2014 academic year are not eligible for a Feeding Tomorrow scholarship. If you are a graduating senior, planning to pursue a graduate degree in food science, please refer to the graduate scholarship information.
  • Applicant must have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
  • Applicant must be a student member of IFT at the time of application.

The Undergraduate Scholarship Application (PDF) must be typed in English and include the following documents:

  3. The Undergraduate Scholarship Application (PDF), submitted electronically in a PDF to undergradscholarship@ift.org with the subject line: “Applicant’s Name: Application.”

Graduate Scholarships

Graduate scholarships are awarded to outstanding MS and Ph.D. students pursuing research and education in the field of food science and technology.

Guidelines

Student applicants must be pursuing a graduate degree with an emphasis in food science and related disciplines.  They must be able to understand and appreciate the impact of their research on the global food supply. Research in such disciplines as genetics, horticulture, nutrition, microbiology, biochemistry, engineering, chemistry, etc. are not eligible unless it is directly related to the student's research program in food science, except as otherwise noted. The school of enrollment can be any educational institution conducting fundamental investigations for the advancement of food science and food technology, unless there are stated exceptions of scholarship criteria for sponsored scholarships.

Eligibility:

  • Applicant must be enrolled as a full-time MS or Ph.D. student beginning in the Fall 2013 academic year.
  • Applicant must have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
  • Applicant must be a student member of IFT at the time of application.

Application:
The Graduate Scholarship Application (PDF) must be typed in English and include the following documents:

  1. One recommendation letter from a teacher, employer, or mentor emailed directly from the recommender to scholarship_gr@ift.org with the subject line: “Applicant’s Name: Recommendation.”
  2. An academic transcript that includes a cumulative summary of the student’s GPA emailed to scholarship_gr@ift.org. First year graduate students must submit their undergraduate transcript. Both official e-transcripts and complete scans of transcripts will be accepted. Mailed transcripts will not be accepted.
  3. The Graduate Scholarship Application (PDF) must be submitted electronically as a PDF to scholarship_gr@ift.org,with the subject line: “Applicant’s Name: Application.”
