In the last decade the marketing of food for specialized nutrition and wellness has undergone tremendous demographic, regulatory and legal changes. Regulatory scrutinizing of both government agencies and plaintiff attorneys has increased the risks associated with food labeling. This session presents an overview of the latest developments, regulatory enforcement and civil litigation trends as well as tips for risk management in the labeling and marketing of food in the wellness space. Practical examples of successful labeling and “red flag” labeling issues will also be shared.
Tony Pavel, Partner, Food Law Practice, Morgan, Lewis & Brockius, LLP
Tony Pavel is a Partner in the Food Practice at Morgan Lewis & Bockius. Mr. Pavel represents small, mid-size, and large ingredient and CPG food companies, advising them on marketing and labeling strategy in addition to food safety and enforcement matters. Mr. Pavel has a broad range of experience with issues including food safety, labeling, GRAS self-affirmations and notifications. He assists clients with novel food additive petitions, product claims in labeling, advertising, and other promotional material, as well as clinical research and substantiation issues, and regulatory strategies for new product development. Mr. Pavel is a frequent lecturer at IFT meetings, the past Chair of IFT’s Food Laws and Regulations Division and Past Chair of the DC Section. During Mr. Pavel's undergraduate and legal studies, he worked for a food HACCP consulting business.
