Nutrition Profiling around the World: Setting Standards for Food and Beverages

Nutrition profiling is being used to determine what should be allowed to be marketed to children, available in schools, taxed, and/or used as part of other dietary guidance. An understanding of these systems from around the world and their scientific underpinnings will help product developers and marketers be successful in this new food environment. This session will provide an overview of nutrition profiling systems around the world, and how they are being used by the industry and governments.
Cathy Kapica, Ph.D., R.D., L.D., Senior Vice President, Ketchum
With 20+ years of experience in health and nutrition, and in addition to her role at Ketchum, Dr. Cathy Kapica is adjunct professor of Nutrition at Tufts University. Dr. Kapica is the former global director of Nutrition for the McDonald's Corporation, where she led the worldwide nutrition effort for McDonald's. Prior to joining McDonald's, Dr. Kapica served as senior scientist and director of Nutrition Education at the Quaker Oats Company where she educated consumers, health professionals, and the media on the health benefits of oats. A registered dietitian, Dr. Kapica is a former media spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association.
Lu Ann Williams, Head of Research, Innova Market Insights
Lu Ann Williams is head of Research at Innova Market Insights, a provider of market research services, including The Innova Database. She started her career in The Netherlands twenty years ago with Wolters Kluwer before moving to leading science publisher Elsevier. For the past fifteen years, she has been involved in the international food industry, where she partners with the world's largest food and beverage companies on product development and marketing strategies, trends analysis, open innovation projects, and technology scouting. Ms. Williams oversees the content for the "Taste The Trend" Pavillion at the IFT Food Expo and holds a master's degree in business administration.
