Health Insurance Wellness Programs: Opportunities for the Food Industry?

As healthcare costs skyrocket, the insurance industry increasingly offers programs that encourage members to be healthier. Sample programs may include access to personal trainers and dieticians, incentives for eating healthier, and higher premiums for those who participate in riskier behaviors such as smoking. Learn how these programs work, how they benefit consumers and carriers, and how the food industry can partner in these initiatives for a healthier population.
Nicholas Gettas, M.D., Chief Medical Officer, Regional Accounts, CIGNA
As Chief Medical Officer, CIGNA Regional Accounts, Dr. Nicholas Gettas has direct responsibilities spanning Sales, Quality, Networks including Collaborative Accountable Care Relationships and Total Medical Cost Management. Dr. Gettas is a board-Certified Family Physician, cum laude graduate (1980) of the University of Toronto, Faculty of Medicine, with many years of clinical, teaching and administrative experience. His professional responsibilities have included: Active Family Practice (1982 through 1994); Academic Family Practice (1994 through 1998 - Wayne State University School of Medicine and Medical College of Virginia); Academic/Community based Administrative Medicine - President and Medical Director of a large physician IPA (Virginia); and Medical Director (1998 through current). Dr. Gettas joined CIGNA Health Care in 1998. His responsibilities within CIGNA have spanned Medicare and Commercial populations, Insured and Self-Insured Products, National and Regional Accounts Clients, and have included: Vice President and Senior Medical Director, Virginia Market; Vice President and Senior Market Medical Director, Mid-Atlantic Region; Vice President and Senior Medical Executive, CIGNA National Sales; Chief Medical Officer, CIGNA National Accounts; and Chief Medical Officer, CIGNA Regional Accounts. In 2004, he was awarded the CIGNA HealthCare’s President’s and Pinnacle Awards, in recognition of work to define and value the Integration of Medical and Pharmacy Benefits.
Judith Kolish, R.D, L.D.N, C.D.E., Health Promotion Specialist, Motiva Corporate Wellness
Judy Kolish is a Registered and Licensed Dietitian, Certified Diabetes Educator and Trained Chef working at Health Care Service Corporation dba BCBSIL, OK, NM,TX. She has been with the Motiva (internal wellness dept) for over 5 yrs. Her role here at HCSC is more of a nutrition consultant. She delivers various nutrition programs and created the nutrition guidelines that are standards for our cafeteria and vending. In addition to her corporate wellness background, she have extensive experience in all different aspects of healthcare. She has been instrumental in helping organizations understand and value the holistic approach to health by introducing new ideas and programs that help people get to the core of their challenges around self care. She has extensive experience working in a variety of settings including diabetes education, individual and group counseling, physician education, heart disease prevention, research and weight management. Her sensitivity to patients' needs and concerns has grown as a result of her experience working with culturally and economically diverse populations in different clinical and nonclinical environments. She welcomes the challenge of helping people achieve their goals regardless of any barriers. She has designed and implemented various approaches, teaching tools and programs for empowering employees to take charge of their health in order to reach their full wellness potential.
Haydee Muse, M.D., M.B.A., F.C.C.P., Regional Medical Director for Mid-America Region, Aetna
Regional Medical Director Aetna National Care Management Mid America Region: responsible for clinical and operational strategic leadership of the regional Medical Services Department. Dr Muse has held various senior roles in Mid America Region including Head of Medicare Care Management Unit. Dr Muse has interest in health care disparities and clinical performance measures development. She has collaborated with national organizations in the development of clinical performance measures for public reporting as a member of the National Quality Forum Geriatric Technical Advisory Panel in 2007 and the NQF Prevention Technical Advisory Panel, "Standardizing Ambulatory Care Performance Measures" Project in 2005. Member of the American Medical Association Physician Consortium Performance Improvement Dementia Work Group in 2011 and Nuclear Medicine Work Group in 2008. Currently a member of the 2012 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention New Beginnings Task Group from the National Diabetes Education Program, to develop consumer educational guide for people with diabetes. Dr Muse volunteers as a Clinical Ambassador for the American Cancer Society; Board of Directors Vice Chair for Easter Seals Dupage and Fox Valley Region and a member of the Board of Directors of The Oklahoma High Risk Pool.
