Scholarships

Feeding Tomorrow: The Foundation of the Institute of Food Technologists Feeding Tomorrow scholarships  support the next generation of food scientists. Scholarships for the 2011-2012 academic year are available now.

In 2009, the National Center for Education Statistics found that the expenses of tuition, room, and board increased by 30% at public universities and 21% at private universities, between the academic years of 1996-2006. Recently, the U.S. Department of Agriculture reported that U.S. universities will not graduate enough students with food, agricultural, and natural resource degrees in the next five years to meet demand.

Feeding Tomorrow Scholarships both address the financial needs of deserving students and help to ensure a qualified, scientific workforce for the future. Nearly 100 undergraduate and graduate students received Feeding Tomorrow scholarships last year.

Fun Run & Walk

Fun Run 2010 Start  Fun Run 2010 Group

Each year, Feeding Tomorrow and the IFT Student Association also host a 5K run/3.1 mile walk at the IFT Annual Meeting & Food Expo. The Fun Run & Walk is a great event that promotes fitness and provides financial resources for undergraduate and graduate food science scholarships.

The 10th Annual Fun Run & Walk raised more than $75,000 for the Feeding Tomorrow Scholarship Program- a record high! More than 600 participants registered for the 5K event. Bruce Ferree of California Natural Products was the top individual fundraiser. There were over 20 teams the morning of the race. The Cornell University Food Fighters had the largest number of participants.

Thanks again to the event sponsors, product donors and participants who helped celebrate this special event!

Science Reports

Feeding Tomorrow-funded publications and outreach activities bring credible food science-based information to policy makers, the media, and the general public. Five IFT Expert Reports, including “Making Decisions About the Risks of Chemicals in Foods with Limited Scientific Information,” released in 2009, have helped to raise public awareness of critical food issues.

Service & Outreach

Feeding Tomorrow partnered with Discovery Education® to bring food science resources to high school students, teachers, and counselors. Food science multi-media kits were sent to nearly 18,000 public high schools throughout the U.S. The Food Science Ambassador program continues to spread the word about food science by sending IFT member food scientists into classrooms. Food Science Ambassadors teach students, teachers, counselors, and parents about food chemistry, food engineering, food safety, product development, and nutrition.
