Owen Fennema, Professor Emeritus of Food Science at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, passed away August 1 at the age of 83.
Owen Fennema, Professor Emeritus of Food Science at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, passed away August 1 at the age of 83. He joined the UW faculty in 1960 and retired in 1996. Duringthat time he served as department chair and in many other leadership roles including President of IFT, Editor-in-Chief of IFT Peer-Reviewed Journals and recipient of IFT’s highest honor, the Nicholas Appert Award. He authored the widely used food science textbook, Fennema’s Food Chemistry and was recognized as one of the “fathers of food science.” Owen was also an accomplished stained glass artist and a poet. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth, sister, children and grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name toAgrace HospiceCare at 5395 E.
