How to Prepare for a Mentoring Session

  • Prioritize the mentoring session, making sure that it isn’t “bumped” in your calendar by other demands.
  • Set aside time and space for the mentoring session to ensure that you will be uninterrupted.
  • Give yourself enough time to get to the site of the mentoring session.
  • Review any email correspondence and notes that you may have from previous sessions.
  • Clear your mind and prepare to give your full attention to the mentee during the conversation. Get in the mood for mentoring by letting go of urgencies and stresses and focusing on the idea of helping the mentee.
  • Consider and collect any resources that might be useful to the mentee.

  • Take a moment to develop an agenda or focus for the mentoring conversation. You may even want to email the mentor to let her know what is on your mind ahead of time.
  • Reflect on progress since the last conversation and identify highlights that you’d like to share with your mentor.
  • Consider what you’d like to know about your mentor and plan to ask direct questions to learn more about his or her experiences.
  • Bring your notepad and business card.
  • Confirm the date, time and location.
  • Plan enough time in your calendar to arrive punctually.
