July 15th Call - Review

Good Afternoon All,

I’ve attached a copy of the slides from our last meetingthat took place on July 15th. Below is some feedback that took placeduring our call.

Fennema Lecture:  The Fennema Lecture was an inspiringconversation and the room was full. Although the workshop lacked much of theattendance, the content was enjoyed by attendees. It was suggested to move theFennema Lecture and Workshop closer together. Presentation conflicts preventedpeople from attending the workshop.

It was also suggested to possibly develop a class settingfor the Fennema Workshop. Suggestions arose for the Fennema Workshop topic nextyear would include a case study and explanation on how it was developed.

Session Length:  Feedback regarding the session length was thatsessions were too short. It was suggested that Interactive Panels be at leastan hour. The networking session attendance was also low. Some topics to lookfor next year should be Academia and Generations, Generational learning. It’salso suggested to involve the Student Association more.

Where do college graduates work? Focus on STEM
I think a lot of food science students wonder where they can gets jobs after college or graduate school. In the new craze of infographics, I thought this was a particularly striking (and interactive!) infographic. It's about where college graduates work after college, and the focus is on STEM professions. It doesn't address food science directly, but it does break out STEM professions into engineering, physical sciences, biological/agricultural sciences, and so on. One thing I thought was particularly interesting was that most STEM college majors DON'T go on to work in a STEM job- most end up in a non-science role. As a scientist and huge STEM proponent, I think this highlights the need now more than ever to encourage our young people to pursue jobs in the sciences! Check it out:
