Chair: Tien-Hsin Wu, University of California, Davis (iftsa.hearthealthy@gmail.com)
Overview and Purpose:
Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death in the U.S. and Canada. To address this public health issue and highlight the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2010, CanolaInfo is pleased to sponsor a new competition for Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) Student Association members in the U.S. and Canada to create heart-healthy food products low in saturated fat and free of trans fat. The goal is to show how the food industry is positioning itself to help consumers comply with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2010, namely the saturated fat recommendation of 10 percent total daily calories. To this end, products must meet certain nutritional criteria based on U.S. Food and Drug Administration food labeling guidelines. The competition finals will be held at the IFT Wellness Conference, March 28-29, 2012 at the InterContinental Chicago Hotel in Rosemont, IL.
The first round of preliminary proposals will be due in January 2012 and judged based on nutritional criteria below and other guidelines in the competition rules. Three finalist teams will be selected from the preliminary proposals. Finalists will be notified by the end of January and the final proposals will be due in February 2012. Three team members from each finalist team will be provided travel grants and complimentary registrations to Wellness 12. One first, second and third place winner will be selected from among the three finalists.
