May 18, 2016

The Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science at the University of California, Davis has named Ryan Dowdy the recipient of the 2016 Arla Foods Graduate Fellowship. Dowdy, a second year doctoral student in the Department of Food Science and Technology at UC Davis, will receive $40,000 to support one year of his research on renewable desalination of dairy waste streams with improved membrane technology. Dowdy’s career plan is to pursue green technologies in the field of food science that improve both the supply and quality of foods on a global scale. Dowdy is a member of the Institute of Food Technologists.

“We are thrilled to have the support of Arla Foods and the Robert Mondavi Institute as we create new opportunities for waste-to-coproduct technologies in dairy processing,” said UC Davis professor and food engineer Christopher Simmons. “Ryan’s research will utilize microbial desalination processes to remove salts from cheese processing waste streams to assist with coproduct isolation.”

Arla Foods joined the Robert Mondavi Institute Industry Partnership Program in 2015 and Dowdy is the second Arla Foods Graduate Fellow. The naming of a graduate fellow to conduct research in an area of interest to the company is a benefit of membership in this program.
