Face-to-Face: Kelli Heinz August 2019

Ever wonder if anyone else is facing the same professional challenges as you? Or just looking to connect with some new people in your field? In IFT's Face-to-Face series, we will be introducing you to a different IFT member every month with a fun, insightful Q&A session.

This month meet...

Kelli HeinzKelli Heinz, vice president of marketing and industry affairs, Bell Flavors & Fragrances

  1. How did you get your start in the food industry?
I grew up in it with my father always bringing home new candies or foods with our flavors in them to try. My brother and I would get so excited every year for the big bag of candy from the NCA Sweet & Snacks Expo our father would give to us. As a kid, that was everything. It felt like Halloween in May.

  2. What do you love about your job?
I love that I get to work with my family every day. There is something very special working together to achieve one goal in growing Bell’s business and customer relationships. Seeing both my father, my brother, and cousins at work always brings a smile to my face.

  3. What is the biggest challenge that you face in your job?
On both sides of the business (flavors & fragrances) we keep getting consumers pushing for transparency. Being on both the FEMA board of governors and the board of the Fragrance Creators Association, we are constantly finding new ways to educate the consumer about the safety of our ingredients—especially lobbying at the state level with legislators for a better understanding of sound science.

  4. What have you learned or been exposed to in the past 12 months that has helped you in your job?
I just completed an executive program at Harvard Business School (HBS) that has truly been a transformational experience for me. It changed my entire perspective on business and outlook on life. I owe HBS a lot of gratitude for my new purpose and optimism on how I want to impact the world.

  5. IFT has five core values that help us achieve our mission. They are: Community, Integrity, Passion, Progress, and Respect. Which value do you feel is the most critical to succeeding in your role?
These are all great values so it is hard to choose but I would have to pick integrity because without integrity none of the other values can exist.
