Face-to-Face: Kim Surber June 2019

Ever wonder if anyone else is facing the same professional challenges as you? Or just looking to connect with some new people in your field? In IFT's Face-to-Face series, we will be introducing you to a different IFT member every month with a fun, insightful Q&A session.

This month meet...

Kim SurberKim Surber, marketing manager feed and food, Dow

  1. How did you get your start in the food industry?
I started my career in 1991 with Ciba Geigy producing food preservatives. Since then, I have also worked for BASF and am currently at Dow producing and marketing food and feed preservatives as well as defoamers, emulsifiers, and grain preservatives.

  2. What do you love about your job?
Delivering a great customer experience is what I love most about my job. Interacting with my customers and their customers is very rewarding. Working in the food and feed industry gives one a sense of true purpose—that of helping to feed the world, one solution at a time.

  3. What is the biggest challenge that you face in your job?
The biggest challenge that I face in my role is keeping abreast of ever changing regulatory requirements around the globe.

  4. What have you learned or been exposed to in the past 12 months that has helped you in your job?
I believe that the greatest impact to me over the past year has been centered around embracing a culture of diversity and inclusion not only in my company, but also in the food and feed industry in general. Only a truly diverse and inclusive industry will solve current and future challenges.

  5. How do you see the food industry evolving over the coming year?
The food industry must continue to evolve as we are challenged to meet the growing demand to help feed the world. We must focus on sustainable solutions whether that be on the ingredients side, packing, supply chain, or reduction in quality issues resulting in massive recalls, as well as understanding the impact of social media in our industry.

  6. Fun Fact: What’s your favorite food?
My favorite food is chicken alfredo!

  7. IFT has five core values that help us achieve our mission. They are: Community, Integrity, Passion, Progress, and Respect. Which value do you feel is the most critical to succeeding in your role?
I believe the value of community helps our industry achieve its goals. Once you value your community and feel a sense of ownership and love of your community, intuitively, the values of integrity, passion, progress, and respect will shine through.
