Winter wins Borlaug CAST award
Carl Winter has won the 2012 Borlaug CAST Communication Award from the Council for Agricultural Science and Technology (CAST) for his innovative methods of educating the public about food safety.
Winter, Director of the FoodSafe Program and Extension Food Toxicologist in the Dept. of Food Science and Technology at the University of California–Davis, conducts research and outreach work focusing on pesticide residues and naturally occurring toxins in foods and other food safety issues, and he has developed a way to communicate this information to the public using music. An accomplished musician, Winter writes, records, produces, and performs musical parodies of popular music using lyrics he has modified to explain food safety issues like bacterial contamination, irradiation, biotechnology, and others. He has given about 200 live performances of his food safety music parodies at various conferences, trade shows, and public gatherings over the years.
Winter, a Professional Member of IFT, is a member of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Food Advisory Committee and an author of books and articles. He has served on a variety of committees and teaches courses on communication skills.
Established in 1986 by CAST, the annual award honors an individual who communicates the importance of food and agricultural science to the public, policymakers, and the media. Winter will receive the award at the World Food Prize Symposium on Oct. 17, 2012, in Des Moines, Iowa.
IFT members named IAFoST Fellows
The International Union of Food Science and Technology (IUFoST) has announced the eighth class of food scientists and technologists to be elected to the International Academy of Food Science and Technology (IAFoST). Among these 22 new Fellows, 11 are members of the Institute of Food Technologists. They are Hongda Chen, Roger Clemens, Levente Diosady, Anne Goldman, Richard Hartel, Francis Malcata, Donald Mercer, Dennis Miller, George Saravacos, Sudhir Sastry, and Martin Wiedmann.
Fellows elected to IAFoST are recognized by their peers as outstanding representatives of international food science and technology, and they serve as independent persons to work and promote high standards of ethics and scientific endeavors.
The group will be inducted at the 16th World Congress of Food Science and Technology in Iguassu Falls, Brazil, in August 2012.

Lund retires, Foegeding leads scientific journals
The Institute of Food Technologists has named E. Allen Foegeding Editor-in-Chief of IFT’s monthly peer-reviewed scientific publications, which include Journal of Food Science. His appointment was effective May 1, 2012. He succeeds Daryl Lund, who retired in May after serving as Editor-in-Chief for nine years.
Foegeding, William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor in the Dept. of Food, Bioprocessing, and Nutrition Sciences at North Carolina State University, conducts research and teaches in the areas of protein functionality and polymer and colloidal properties of food products.
He has won multiple research and teaching awards, is a Fellow of IFT and other organizations, has supervised more than 50 graduate students, and has published more than 160 scientific articles.
During Lund’s tenure, all three of IFT’s journals—Journal of Food Science, Comprehensive Reviews in Food Science and Food Safety, and Journal of Food Science Education—have grown in terms of impact and reputation in the field. He worked to make publishing in the journals free for IFT members, created new topical sections in Journal of Food Science that cover emerging food science topics, supported new technologies for distribution of the publications, and worked with the editorial boards to raise the quality of content in the publications. During the nine years he served as Editor-in-Chief, Lund was responsible for publishing 3,744 scientific papers in the three journals.
IFT thanks Lund for his dedicated work on the journals and welcomes Foegeding to the position.
