Fizz Plus 10 Calories
Dr Pepper Snapple, Plano, Texas, has extended its 10 calorie per serving franchise beyond its Dr Pepper soft drink brand. 7UP TEN, A&W TEN, Sunkist TEN, Canada Dry TEN, and RC TEN sodas are said to use a unique blend of nutritive and nonnutritive sweeteners (i.e., high fructose corn syrup, aspartame, and acesulfame K) to deliver a full flavor with only 10 calories per 12-oz serving. The new sodas follow the successful launch in fall 2011 of Dr Pepper TEN, which is claimed to be enjoying strong trial and repeat purchase rates. The five new TEN products were tested throughout 2012 in several markets and have received a strong response, with 40% of sales incremental to the soft drink category. Unlike the new mid-calorie drinks with about 60 calories, the new 10-calorie products are considered low calorie. The bottler is targeting consumers 25–39 years old who drink regular soda but have cut back their consumption because they are watching their calories.
Premium Tuna in a Pouch
Wild Planet Foods, McKinleyville, Calif., has introduced
Wild Albacore Tuna Pouches, Original and
No Salt Added. Packaged in flexible, lightweight, single-serve pouches, Wild Planet’s premium tuna fillets are strictly sourced from U.S. pole and troll boats. Unlike other tuna pouches on the market which contain flaked tuna pieces or tuna salad, the Wild Planet pouches feature a solid piece of albacore that is cooked only once in the package, thereby sealing in the flavorful, omega 3-rich natural juices. With no added water or oil to drain, the product is mess-free. Consumers can tear open the top of the package and the product is ready to eat. Wild Planet’s harvesting practices are 100% compliant with the Best Choices for Sustainability recommendations offered by several environmental groups. The products carry a suggested retail price of $3.99 to $4.29 and are found at several leading grocers in the United States, including Kroger, Target, and Wegman’s.
