David Asiamah Recipient of the General Mills Scholarship and Internship 2010

Scholarship RecipientIFT Student Association members David Asiamah and Dan Xiao were each awarded General Mills Scholarships and Internships for 2010. Both students will receive a $5,000 scholarship in April 2010 and a paid internship working in Research & Development at General Mills next summer. IFT Foundation scholarship funding is provided through the generosity of individual donors, companies and organizations like General Mills who further the education of students pursuing degrees in food science and technology.

As a global company known for developing great leaders, General Mills recruiters selected Asiamah and Xiao because of their exceptional scholastic achievements and leadership experience. Asiamah, a native of Ghana, is currently pursuing a master’s degree at Alabama A & M University.  He earned an IFT Foundation Scholarship in 2006-2007 and the IFT Quality Assurance Arthur T. Schramm Memorial Scholarship in 2008-2009. Asiamah credits his work ethics and research guidance to mentors Dr. Martha Verghese, Dr. Judith Boateng and Dr. Josh Herring at Alabama A & M University. Asiamah also participated in the 2008 Cornell University and University of Massachusetts summer scholars program researching how free radicals affect the stability of lycopene in oil-in-water emulsions.

“I am proud to be part of a group of food science professionals who will shape the future.  Food science is a scientific field which is constantly developing. I can positively influence my community by supplying and ensuring healthy and affordable food. The IFT Foundation plays a fundamental role in the training and development of food scientists like me.”
