Heart-Healthy CompetitionSponsored by CanolaInfo
The Heart-Healthy Product Development Competition finals, sponsored by CanolaInfo, were once again held at Wellness 12.
Designed to illustrate how the food industry is positioning itself to help consumers comply with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the Heart-Healthy Product Development Competition challenged students to compete in developing heart-healthy food products low in saturated fat, and free of trans fat. Products had to meet certain nutritional criteria based on U.S. Food and Drug Administration food labeling guidelines. The three finalist teams featured their presentations at Wellness 12.
Winners of the competition are below:
1st Place: Cornell University for Hummus+
Hummus+ is a fresh take on your average hummus product. By adding sweet potato and butternut squash to the mix, Hummus+ boasts higher potassium, fiber, and vitamin A content than what you'd find on the shelves, in addition to a great new flavor!
2nd Place: The Ohio State University for Morning Glory
Morning Glory- a spiced sweet potato waffle with subtle sweetness from applesauce that's packed with antioxidants and other healthful nutrients.
3rd Place: University of California, Davis for Torteoat
Torteoat is a heart healthy hand held pie with a delicious oat crust, filled with a yogurt custard, and a fruit topping.
