Institute of Food Technologists Student Association Announces Winners of Developing Solutions for Developing Countries

CHICAGO– Two food science student teams—one international, one domestic—were named winners of the Institute of Food Technologists Student Association Developing Solutions for Developing Countries Competition during the IFT 2013 Annual Meeting and Food Expo. The competition, sponsored by Partners in Food Solutions through its corporate partners – General Mills, Cargill and DSM – is designed to promote the application of food science and technology and the development of new products and processes that are targeted at improving the quality of life for people in developing countries.

Food science college student teams across the country were tasked with developing food products to be given as supplements to address malnourishment at HIV relief clinics across developing nations.

A team of students from Rutgers University won the domestic completion for their product Good Mor-N-En, a nutritious ready-to-drink supplement high in protein and micronutrients enriched, is committed to make the daily life of HIV patients’ full of hope and energy. Team members included: Songwei Wu (team captain), Xin Tian, Elham Lashkari, Yan Wang, Ying Wang, Chang Liu, Siyuan Zhou, Kavita H Solanki, Lauren N. Eisen, Harsh M Chandarana, Lumeng Jin.

A team of students from Universiti Putra Malaysia won the international competition for their product EnerTEIN, An instant chowder-like fish soup powder that meets your daily protein and energy needs. Team members included:  Sew Chang Chew (team captain), Najla Gooda Sahib, Tan Tai Boon, Mohd Asraf Mohd Zainudin, Kuan Chee Hao.

Each team received a check for $3,500.
