SPEAKER:

Philip E. Nelson

Scholle Chair Professor

2007 World Food Prize Laureate

The “Nobel” of Food and Agriculture

Department of Food Science, Purdue University

The World Food Prize was established in 1986 by Nobel Prize Recipient, Dr. Norman Borlaug, the recognized father of the Green Revolution. The Prize honors those who have made significant and measureable contributions toward improving the world’s food supply. It recognizes work that significantly impacts the quality, quantity or availability of food world wide. Dr. Nelson will focus on how the use of aseptic processing allowed him to develop a technology that meets these criteria and how it continues to impact food quality and availability around the world. Join us and interact with Dr. Nelson and learn about his fascinating life!

Dr. Nelson has broad experience in the field of food processing. He served as plant manager of a tomato processing plant from 1956-1960. In 1961, he joined the staff at Purdue University and in 1967 earned a Ph.D. in Food Science. Dr. Nelson has carried out an active research program with emphasis on aseptic processing. His aseptic bulk storage process received numerous awards, among them the IFT Industrial Achievement Award in 1976, and in 1995 he was awarded the Nicholas Appert Award, IFT’s top honor. He has authored or co-authored over 65 papers in the field of food science and technology and holds 13 U.S. process patents. His aseptic bulk storage has revolutionized the “not from concentrate” orange juice industry and this technology is now being used in all the major citrus production areas of the world. His involvement in the bag-in-box development has impacted the distribution of fruit concentrates in over 135 countries.
