Message from the Chair Joanne Barnard |

Greetings to all my OSIFT friends, colleagues,
and the wonderful members whom I have not yet met! Welcome to another
great IFT year in beautiful Oregon. I love this time of year. The summer is winding down, the mornings are turning cool and crisp, and the school playgrounds are filled with kids again. As the seasons change I start thinking about some of the things that do not change. Friendships are an important constant, whether it is with your family, your coworkers or your neighbors. Through Oregon Section IFT I have made wonderful friends, friends I will cherish for many, many years. I would like to invite all of you who are not currently active in our Section to become more involved. Wonderful friendships are waiting for you! Our kick off meeting for the coming year is going to be a little bit unusual. Thanks to the tremendous efforts of my friends and colleagues Brian Campbell, OSIFT Chair Elect and Kim Hutchinson, OSIFT Secretary we will be treated to a marvelous barbeque feast at the Oregon Outdoor Kitchens and the Traeger Grill Center in Sherwood. (Pray for sun!) We have the use of this wonderful venue free of charge and members have donated almost everything else. The proceeds from the dinner meeting will be donated to the Oregon State University Fermentation Science Club. Current OSU Food Science students will talk to us about the club and its value to the students, the school, and the future of great Oregon beer and wine. As Brian says, be there or be square! Just as friends enjoy our good times alongside us, they can also be important to us in our times of need. The Oregon State University Department of Food Science and Technology is a dear friend to all of us in the food industry of this great state. The current budget for the Food Science budget is not adequate to staff the teaching assistants that are so important to the success of the programs. Teaching assistants provide a valuable resource to all of us, not just to the students. Without teaching assistants, faculty members are faced with more sections to teach and larger classes. TA’s reduce that load, allowing faculty more time and energy to help those of us in industry when needed. In the spirit of a supportive friendship, Oregon Section Institute of Food Technologists has donated $4000 to the Department of Food Science and Technology at Oregon State University to help with the funding of teaching assistants. I challenge all of you and your companies to add to or match our donation. Please send your tax deductible gifts to: OSU Foundation 850 SW 35th St. Corvallis, OR 97333 Please write “Food Science Teaching Assistant Funds” on your check and make it payable to The OSU Foundation. Again, welcome to another year with great minds and fine friends! I hope to see you all at the Oregon Outdoor Kitchens and the Traeger Grill Center in Sherwood! Cheers! Joanne Barnard |
