Message from the Chair

Joanne Barnard

Greetings to all my OSIFT friends, colleagues, and the wonderful members whom I have not yet met! Welcome to another great IFT year in beautiful Oregon.

I love this time of year. The summer is winding down, the mornings are turning cool and crisp, and the school playgrounds are filled with kids again. As the seasons change I start thinking about some of the things that do not change. Friendships are an important constant, whether it is with your family, your coworkers or your neighbors. Through Oregon Section IFT I have made wonderful friends, friends I will cherish for many, many years. I would like to invite all of you who are not currently active in our Section to become more involved. Wonderful friendships are waiting for you!

Our kick off meeting for the coming year is going to be a little bit unusual. Thanks to the tremendous efforts of my friends and colleagues Brian Campbell, OSIFT Chair Elect and Kim Hutchinson, OSIFT Secretary we will be treated to a marvelous barbeque feast at the Oregon Outdoor Kitchens and the Traeger Grill Center in Sherwood. (Pray for sun!) We have the use of this wonderful venue free of charge and members have donated almost everything else. The proceeds from the dinner meeting will be donated to the Oregon State University Fermentation Science Club. Current OSU Food Science students will talk to us about the club and its value to the students, the school, and the future of great Oregon beer and wine.  As Brian says, be there or be square!

Just as friends enjoy our good times alongside us, they can also be important to us in our times of need. The Oregon State University Department of Food Science and Technology is a dear friend to all of us in the food industry of this great state. The current budget for the Food Science budget is not adequate to staff the teaching assistants that are so important to the success of the programs. Teaching assistants provide a valuable resource to all of us, not just to the students. Without teaching assistants, faculty members are faced with more sections to teach and larger classes. TA’s reduce that load, allowing faculty more time and energy to help those of us in industry when needed.  In the spirit of a supportive friendship, Oregon Section Institute of Food Technologists has donated $4000 to the Department of Food Science and Technology at Oregon State University to help with the funding of teaching assistants. I challenge all of you and your companies to add to or match our donation. Please send your tax deductible gifts to:

OSU Foundation

850 SW 35th St.

Corvallis, OR 97333

Please write “Food Science Teaching Assistant Funds” on your check and make it payable to The OSU Foundation.

Again, welcome to another year with great minds and fine friends! I hope to see you all at the Oregon Outdoor Kitchens and the Traeger Grill Center in Sherwood!

Cheers!

Update from the FIX Chair
Jeff Clawson

OSIFT FIX (Food Ingredient Expo or Suppliers Night) will be held on the 28th of February, 2010 at the Lloyd Double Tree Hotel in Portland.  Please plan to attend this free event and meet suppliers to our food industry – there will be a free buffet dinner and some incredible cheese trays.  Registration information will be on the FIX web page in December but for now circle the date on your calendar!

Suppliers who have never had a booth before can contact jeff.clawson@oregonstate.edu and I will get you on the list and send you registration information. For more information, please visit our website at http://www.ift.org/sections/oregon/FIX/index.htm. Additional details will be added as they become available.

OSIFT Employment Bureau Info

Jo Ellen Wayne

The OSIFT Employment Bureau serves our members and the local food industry by posting job openings to our email listserve.  The service is free and simple.  If you have an open position, contact me at joellenw@ofpc.com with details.  Be sure to include contact information, and a closing date, if appropriate.  I'll send it out to our members, usually the same day. The position will also be included in our next newsletter.

If you are no longer interested in these job postings, you can delete yourself from the listserve.  Just scroll down to the bottom of any listserve posting for instructions.  Be aware that this will also affect other section announcements, like meeting reminders and FIX updates, that are distributed by listserve.

If you know of any open positions, our members would love to hear about them. Please don't hesitate to contact me.  Last year we posted over 60 openings, most of them in Oregon and everything from QA/QC, R&D, Production, Sales, Regulatory and Maintenance.  Thanks to all of you who have participated in the past.  You add tremendous value to our organization.  Hope to hear from you soon,
