Letter from the Chair
Greetings!
The 2007 IFT season started with our annual golf tournament. The event was held on September 25th and was a huge success. Over 120 members participated. Jim Giles did a great job organizing the event. Many thanks to all who participated and especially to our corporate partners for purchasing sponsor signs. The proceeds from this event will support the Food Science program at the University of Missouri Columbia. We look forward to enhancing the scholarship programs at Mizzou. If you did not participate this year, I would encourage you to attend this event next year.
October kicked off our technical meetings. On October 23, Dr. Cory M. Bryant, Sr. Research Scientist with the Institute of Food Technologists, Department of Science, discussed corn based ethanol and its impact on the food industry. Dr. Bryant’s talk was insightful and provided a good overview of the impact of corn ethanol production on our industry. EB Russell did an excellent job coordinating the event.
In November, our group toured the National Corn to Ethanol Research Facility at SIU Edwardsville. Lynn Loudermilk organized the event and it was an excellent complement to our October meeting.
Our section leadership is adding new members. Amy Willott will serve as chair-elect for the 2007-2008 IFT season. Dustie Butteiger of The Solae Company will serve as our Secretary. Jennifer Dudenhoeffer, a senior in Mizzou’s Food Science program, will serve as the student-member of our Executive Committee. Please join me in congratulating Amy, Dustie and Jennifer on their respective positions.
In December, we will have our annual holiday meeting. Patty Baxendale of Givaudan Flavors will present “Indulgent Flavor Trends”. Patty has promised to keep us entertained and she might even provide a sample or two. We will be trying a new venue this year. The students at Mizzou will be taking orders for smoked turkeys.
In closing, I’d like to thank our new section leaders and extend an invitation to section members to become more active in your local IFT. If you are interested, please contact EB Russell or another section leader.
I hope to see you at our December meeting!
