Back Issues

2004 IFT Leadership Conference

In August, I represented the DC Section of IFT at the 2004 IFT Leadership Conference in Chicago.  The IFT Executive Committee and IFT Headquarters staff members host this conference each year for incoming leaders of sections and divisions.

IFT President Dr. Ann Hollingsworth and IFT Executive Vice President Ms. Barbara Byrd Keenan welcomed the group by thanking everyone for their dedicated service to IFT and willingness to participate in the conference so that our sections and divisions can continue to improve.  Ms. Keenan’s staff is currently evaluating membership surveys to identify the areas most in need of change.  She stressed the importance of membership feedback, particularly at the section level, so that we can continue to provide our members with exactly what they want from IFT.

Tekla Syers, from the IFT Foundation, presented an overview of the Foundation and its expected growth in the future.  IFT Foundation funds continue to be used for scholarships, expert reports, global outreach and continuing education.  The Foundation plans to expand staff support and volunteers (including adding an IFT Foundation Liaison position within each section), collaborate with the National Science Teachers Association to promote the study of food science, and eventually develop a Food Q&A website to make IFT the #1 source for food science information.

On a more technical note, the IFT Information Technology (IT) staff plans to move away from mass E-mail messages and move toward on-line threaded discussion forums for sections, divisions, executive committees, etc. in order to facilitate meaningful communication among IFT members.

Overall, IFT provided a very upbeat and positive experience for its incoming leaders and I appreciated the opportunity to participate and learn how to better serve our membership.
