September Meeting

What's new at the grocery store?

Packaging innovation in the marketplace

Program: Innovations in food packaging surround us, but we tend to see them as new products only. Consumers want convenience and great taste, and processors have responded with products like salads ready to eat, tuna steaks in flexible pouches, nutritional beverages in plastic bottles, and yes, even moist dog food in a shelf stable plastic serving tray (Beneful). These products would not be possible without the age of plastic packaging offering new marketing opportunities.

Kicking off the IFT Year is a look at packaging as the driver of product innovation. Two companies, one a manufacturer of plastic packaging and one the leading processor of crabmeat, will share their perspectives on the role of packaging in the marketplace. The third speaker will present her research on modified atmosphere packaging of salads.
