FDA/CFSAN 2007 Priorities Update

Mark your calendars!

On Tuesday, February 20, Dr. Robert E. Brackett, Director of FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN), will present CFSAN priorities and plans for 2007, including Produce Safety. There is no fee for the meeting, but advance registration by February 16 is required. For more information, please see below

It’s Science Fair Time!

Want to meet tomorrow’s food scientists? Volunteer to judge science fairs!

The DC Section is seeking volunteers to identify food-science related middle and high school science fair projects at local fairs. No previous judging experience is required.

Volunteers are needed for the following fairs:

DC IFT Section May Meeting

Please plan to attend the May meeting where the food science-related winners of the local science fairs will be recognized. Dr. John Rupnow, of the University of Nebraska, and IFT Executive Committee member, will be the speaker on May 2 or 3, and YOU will be the topic! Details will be forthcoming.

Thank You 2006 Science Fair Judges!

The section would like to thank the following members for judging the eight regional science fairs in 2006: Monica Gonzalez, Jack Sniado, Jim Van Wyk, Jeff Moore, Robyn Jones, Jennifer (Burnham) Parker, Mara Dorsch, Priya Rathnam, David Haytowitz, Monali Yajnik, Brian Bowker and Betty Bugusu.

31st National Nutrient Databank Conference

On April 27, 2007, the 31st National Nutrient Databank Conference will be held as a satellite to the Experimental Biology Annual Meeting, in Washington, DC. The Nutrient Databank Conference is held annually to foster communication among the nutrient database generators and users. Participation is open to researchers from academia, the food industry, government, and other interested parties. There is no registration fee, but pre-registration is required. Via Metro

The FDA/ Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition is located directly across the street from the College Park Metro Station on the Green Line.  The College Park station is the next to the last stop on the Green Line in the direction of Greenbelt.

From Baltimore and Points North

Take I-95 South to Washington. Take the exit for I-95/495 South to Richmond.

Take exit 23, Kenilworth Avenue (MD-201 South).  (follow the sign that says Bladensburg NOT towards Greenbelt).  Travel approximately 2 1/4 miles on Kenilworth Avenue (MD-201 South) and turn right on Paint Branch Parkway (You will see a sign for the College Park Airport).Travel approximately 0.5 miles and turn left onto River Road at the intersection of River Road and Paint Branch Parkway.  The FDA building is located at the intersection of River Road and Paint Branch Parkway.   

Drive past the building (the College Park Metro stop is directly across the street from our building on the right hand side) to the guard house on the left for the entrance to the parking lot.   Turn left into the FDA parking lot and stop at the guard house.  Tell the guard that you are here for a meeting and who you are to meet with.  Proceed forward and park in the visitor parking lot on your right.

Driving Via I-495 Eastbound

Take the beltway I-495 to exit 23, Kenilworth Avenue (MD-201 South).  Stay to the right through the ramp and then merge left onto Kenilworth Avenue (follow the sign that says Bladensburg NOT towards Greenbelt).  Travel approximately 2 1/4 miles on Kenilworth Avenue (MD-201 South) and turn right on Paint Branch Parkway (You will see a sign for the College Park Airport).

Traveling from Crystal City and Points South of Washington, DC

Take 395 N.Exit at South Capitol St. and merge to the left (get into the middle lane).

Follow signs for DC 295 (go under the bridge and merge into the right hand lane for DC 295 N).  DC 295 N becomes BW Parkway. Exit at East-West Hwy (410).Turn left at the bottom of the ramp and get into the far right hand lane.  Travel approx. 1 mile and turn right onto Kenilworth Ave. (201). Travel approx. 1 1/4 miles and turn left onto Paint Branch Pkwy.
