Plan now to attend the 12th World Congress of Food Science and Technology!

The IUFoST 12th World Congress of Food Science and Technology will be held July 16-20, 2003 at the Hilton Hotel & Towers in Chicago, Illinois, USA. The theme for the Congress is "Feeding the World - Opportunities without Boundaries". The technical program for the Congress will consist of plenary lectures, discussion sessions related to the plenary lectures, symposia, roundtable discussions, student symposia, and posters. Congress XII will immediately follow the 2003 Annual Meeting of the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) in Chicago (July 12-16). The IFT Annual Meeting ends at noon on Wednesday, July 16 and Congress XII will begin with sessions that afternoon. Current plans are to offer special registration packages for Congress participants wishing to attend the IFT 2003 Annual Meeting or to attend the IFT Food Exhibition on Tuesday, July 15 or Wednesday morning, July 16.  Visit www.ift.org for more details.

Would you like to host the Washington, DC IFT March Meeting? 

The meeting topic will focus on a hot topic in nutrition today. If you would like to host the meeting and have a convenient location in the DC-Metro area that holds approx. 45 people, contact Dorothea Vafiadis, DC IFT Chair-Elect at dvafiadis@aol.com.

Volunteer Judges Needed for Science Fair

Each year members of the Washington, DC Section IFT judge regional high school science fairs.The winners are awarded a one-year subscription to "Food Technology" and given an award certificate from the section.  Several judges are needed for the following fairs:

We need volunteers to serve on the Awards Committee, chaired by Joan R. Rothenberg, International Food Information Council (202-296-6540 or rothenberg@ific.org).  Contact Joan if you are interested in serving on this committee. 

5th International Food Data Conference/27th National Nutrient Databank Conference

The conference will be held at the Washington Marriott from June 30 to July 3, 2003.  The theme for the conference is: Fostering Quality Science in Food Composition DatabasesSessions will be held from June 30 to July 2, with workshops and tours on July 3rd.  The welcoming reception will be held on June 30 after the days sessions.  For more information, visit the conference Web site:  http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/conf

Nearest Metro: College Park Metro, East side of Calvert Rd. at CSX/MARC RR between Rt. 1 & Kenilworth Ave. (Green line). Using Metro is encouraged!!

Directions to College Park from South of DC:  Take 395 N and exit at South Capitol St. and merge to the left (get into the middle lane).  Follow signs for DC 295 (go under the bridge and merge into the right hand lane for DC 295 N).  DC 295 N becomes BW Parkway.  Exit at East-West Hwy (410).  Turn left at the bottom of the ramp and get into the far right hand lane.  Travel approx. one mile and turn right onto Kenilworth Ave. (MD 201).  Travel approx. 1 1/4 miles and turn left onto Paint Branch Pkwy.  Travel approx. 0.5 miles and turn left onto River Road at the intersection of River Road and Paint Branch Parkway.  The FDA building is located at the intersection of River Road and Paint Branch Parkway. 

Driving Via I-495 Eastbound:  Take the beltway I-495 to exit 23, Kenilworth Avenue (MD-201 South).  Stay to the right through the ramp and then merge left onto Kenilworth Avenue (follow the sign that says Bladensburg NOT towards Greenbelt).   Travel approximately 2 1/4 miles on Kenilworth Avenue (MD-201 South) and turn right on Paint Branch Parkway (You will see a sign for the College Park Airport).  Travel approximately 0.5 miles and turn left onto River Road at the intersection of River Road and Paint Branch Parkway.  The FDA building is located at the intersection of River Road and Paint Branch Parkway.

Parking : The Metro short term parking lot is directly across the street from the CFSAN building.  You may either park in the short term Metro lot and walk across the street or continue down the road approximately 1/5 mile and turn left into the FDA parking lot.  You will be directed by the guard to park in the lot on your right and walk down the street to the entrance of the FDA building.
