A Message from the Chair
Recently I attended a formative meeting of the Eastern Food Science Conference (EFSC), a biennial event designed as a regional meeting for IFT. The EFSC Committee is looking for interested members to put together golf tournaments, chair awards committees, organize symposia, etc. If you want to get involved in planning this meeting for Fall, 1999, call our newly elected member-at-large Les Bluhm (202-205-8884).
I'd like to thank my current executive committee and some past members for the time commitment they've made this year. So KUDOS to Steve Ziller, Mike Wehr, Michelle Smith, Amy Kneipp, Alison Reich, David Haytowitz, Karen Carson, Katie Egan, Roy Martin, Elizabeth Boyle-Roden, Jack Cooper, Don Kautter, Lisa Weddig and Isabel Walls. If you are serving next year and want to go to New Officers School at IFT, be advised that the Workshop, sponsored by the Committee of Sections and Divisions (CSD) is on Tuesday June 23, 1998, fiom 9-12 noon.
Eric Decker, current Chair of CSD and I (Chair for next year) have put together a great group of speakers for this program.
I'm quite excited about our May 12 meeting. Kathryn McMurry of IFT and Society for Nutrition Education and I have put this program together which honors our Science Fair winners as well as bringing in excellent NASA speakers. Dr Charles Bourland will fly up from the Johnson Space Center in Houston to give us the food science perspective on long term space travel. The Section will pay in part for his expenses but I want to thank our sponsors Grocery Manufacturers of America, National Food Processors Association and SNE. The Executive Committee is committed to good programming and has made the decsion to use dues money towards speakers. We welcome your thoughts on this use of our Section money.
Have a great summer, and I hope to see you in Atlanta at IFT '98.
