Background

Carmen I. Moraru is Professor and Chair in the Department of Food Science at Cornell University. After working in the Dairy industry in her native Romania for 2 years, she returned to her Alma Mater, the University of Galati, Romania, where she was as a faculty member for 8 years. In 1999, she joined Rutgers University in NJ as a Postdoctoral Associate and then Research Assistant Professor. She has been a faculty member in the Department of Food Science at Cornell University since 2003. At Cornell, Carmen leads a teaching and research program focused on using engineering principles and novel processing methods to improve food quality and safety. To date, she has authored more than 60 peer reviewed papers, several books and book chapters, and about 150 research abstracts. She is often invited to speak at universities and professional meetings in the US and around the globe. In 2019, she received the honorary title of Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Bucharest, Romania.

IFT Highlights

A professional member of IFT since 1999, Carmen has served the organization in various capacities over the past 20 years. Most notably, she was Past Chair, Chair, Chair Elect and Secretary of IFT’s Nonthermal Processing Division, as well as a member of the Higher Education Review Board Guidelines Revisions Task Force, Division Enhancement Workgroup, Certified Food Scientist Ad Hoc Group and Certification Feasibility Advisory Panel. She served many times as session reviewer, abstract reviewer and graduate paper competition judge at the IFT Annual Meetings, and taught in several IFT short courses on nonthermal processing. In 2017, she received the Outstanding Service Award from the Nonthermal Processing Division.
