The company received a temporary permit from FDA to test market the product, since it deviates from the U.S. standard of identity for canned tuna. The permit allows Bumble Bee to measure consumer acceptance of the product, identify mass production problems, and assess commercial feasibility. Bumble Bee is based in San Diego, Calif.
