V8 Juice for Vending
Campbell Soup Co., Camden, N.J., is using a custom hot-fill polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottle from Amcor PET Packaging, Manchester, Mich., to redesign its V8 juice and V8 V-Fusion fruit and juice lines. The new 12-oz bottle is suitable for use in vending machines, in addition to retail shelves. An alliance between Campbell Soup and Coca-Cola Co., Atlanta, Ga., has enabled the extension of the juice brands into vending. "We were looking at ways to move into distribution channels where we have little presence today," explained Jina Sohn, Associate Brand Manager, Campbell Soup Co. "Now that our bottle is vendable, our beverages can be available wherever vending machines exist—schools, malls, offices, retail outlets, hospitals, etc. Through our alliance with The Coca-Cola Co., we are able to provide more nutritious 100% juice options in the education channel, particularly high schools."

Breads May Lower Cholesterol
Consumers want to eat healthier, but they do not want to give up their favorite everyday foods. Kroger’s Active Lifestyle breads from Kroger, Columbus, Ohio, contain CoroWise plant sterols from Cargill, Minneapolis, Minn. Varieties include Honey Oat and Whole Grain, 100% Whole Wheat, Multigrain with Brown Rice, 5 Seed Whole Grain, Whole Grain White, and Whole Grain High Fiber bread.

"The availability of CoroWise plant sterols in Kroger Active Lifestyle bread makes it easier than ever to enjoy heart-healthy food in any meal of the day. Whether you use it in toast or sandwiches, it can help keep your arteries clear and your heart strong," said Rebecca S. Reeves, DrPH, past President of the American Dietetic Assoc. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, foods that meet nutritional eligibility requirements for health claims and contain at least 0.4 g/serving of plant sterols, consumed twice a day with meals (for a daily total intake of at least 0.8 g), as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease.

Packaging Adds Convenience to Homemade Mashed Potatoes
H.J. Heinz, Pittsburgh, Pa., allows consumers to make homemade mashed potatoes in 15 min or less with Ore-Ida Steam n’ Mash potatoes. The frozen, peeled and chopped potatoes come in a steaming bag that can be microwaved for 10 min. Consumers pour the cooked potatoes into a bowl, add milk and butter, and mash away. Found in the grocery freezer aisle, Steam n’ Mash potatoes are available in four varieties—Cut Russet, Three-Cheese, Garlic Seasoned, and Sweet Potatoes.

"We take great pride in bringing a new aspect of convenience to a nourishing, homemade food families love but often find too time-consuming to make from scratch," said Wendy Joyce, Director of Marketing. "Whether chunky or smooth, or in your family’s favorite recipe, Steam n’ Mash products offer a convenient way to make your own favorite homemade mashed potatoes in a fraction of the time, so you can spend less time in the kitchen and more time with your family at the dinner table."
