IFT wins Excel Awards
IFT has won four Association Media & Publishing Excel Awards, which honor the association publishing industry’s top media products and offerings.

Food Technology magazine received two awards: A Silver Award for Magazines, Cover Photography, for the December 2010 issue and a Bronze Award, Magazine Feature Article, for “Adding Ethnic Flair to Foods” by Karen Nachay (August 2010).

In addition, IFT’s “A Day in the Life of a NASA Food Scientist” won the Silver Award for Media Innovation, Video, and its website, www.ift.org, won the Silver Award for Web Publishing, Redesign.

Solbar names Watson President
Todd R. Watson is the new President of Solbar effective June 1. He has worked in the food ingredients and commodity industries for more than 25 years and has experience in sales and marketing at Cargill, ABF Ingredients, and Protient Inc. He is a Member of IFT.

Awards go to Halbrook, Hollingsworth
Two IFT members received the NSF International 2011 NSF Food Safety Leadership Awards, which honor outstanding efforts in advancing food safety.

Brenda Halbrook, Director, Office of Food Safety, U.S. Dept. of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service, won the NSF  Food Safety Leadership Education Award for developing the Office of Food Safety at the USDA to help eliminate all food safety hazards in foods provided through the USDA nutrition assistance programs. Food safety and nutrition in schools have improved as a result of numerous national food safety education programs implemented under her direction.

Jill Hollingsworth received the NSF Food Safety Leadership Lifetime Achievement Award for Industry and Association Food Safety for dedicating her career to advancing food safety efforts globally. Her accomplishments include serving as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force Reserves as part of the Biomedical Sciences Corp., specializing in biological warfare and food defense; managing a variety of scientific activities, including outbreak investigations and recalls, while working for the USDA; and helping to develop the global food safety and quality certification and management system known as the Safe Quality Food Institute. She recently retired from her position as Senior Vice President of Food Safety Programs at Food Marketing Institute.
