Mold inhibitor finds use in food, military applications
Using a superabsorbent hydrogel, Chris Doona, a senior research chemist at the Natick Soldier Research, Development, and Engineering Center (NSRDEC), created a humidity-controlled, time-released method to generate chlorine dioxide at low levels inside containers to prevent mold growth on fresh fruits and vegetables. Now, Doona is expanding the system’s application to textiles—specifically, parachute sleeves for the military.
