To meet the demands for innovative nutrition bars, Nellson LLC opened a new manufacturing facility. The 300,000-sq-ft plant, which is located in Ontario, Calif., includes a number of capabilities and technologies that allow its product developers to create new ingredients and formulate bars that address such areas as sports performance, wellness, weight management, snack, and functional and medical nutrition.
One of the features of the plant is its streamlined layout with segregated lines that allow for brand confidentiality (multiple customers can be in the plant at the same time but will not come into contact with each other or the products in development), allergen control (separate air filtration, heating, and cooling functions in each of the segregated areas), food safety, efficient sanitation, and flexible production capabilities.
A portion of the plant is dedicated to the R&D Collaboration Center where the experts at Nellson will work with customers on their formulations and be able to perform commercial scale-up production and consumer testing. The collaborative work with customers will accelerate speed to market, says Bart Child, senior vice president of commercial development at Nellson.
There’s also in-line process capabilities that produce new formats such as slabbed and extruded bites, triple layer bars, and custom shapes. The in-line dual mixing capabilities allow for the blending of a variety of ingredients, including fragile cereal pieces, crisp-based layers, and dense high-protein doughs. Finally, the new manufacturing facility is connected with smart technology and energy efficient systems to conserve energy, water, and other resources and has programs to maximize recycling and reduce waste.
