In an effort to curb obesity, Malaysia will impose a tax on sugar-sweetened drinks in 2019. Beginning April 1, soft drinks with added sugars of more than 5 g per 100 ml and juice and vegetable drinks with added sugars of more than 12 g per 100 ml will be taxed at 40 sen per liter.

According to a recent ministry of health study, about 1 in 2 Malaysians are overweight or obese.
