CHICAGO – March 14, 2023 – The Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), a nonprofit scientific organization committed to advancing the science of food and its application across the global food system, is proud to announce that it has launched a new resource group for its LGBTQIA+ members and allies. The Proud Resource Group was created to provide wide visibility of the LGBTQIA+ experience, providing a safe space for connection, advocacy, and acceptance for all in the science of food.

IFT’s other Member Resource Groups include the Women’s Resource Group, and the African, African American, Black Resource Group. These groups, which provide a supportive space for collaboration and peer support for those who have been historically underrepresented and under supported, support the needs and challenges of these communities as they work with IFT to address barriers and inequities across the science of food profession.

“IFT’s resource groups play a critical role in promoting inclusivity and driving positive change within the science of food. Proud Resource Group is an exciting addition to our existing resource groups and reflects IFT’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging,” said IFT CEO Christie Tarantino-Dean.

Proud Resource Group members will have access to education and trainings, professional development opportunities, as well as forums for sharing best practices and insights for advancing LGBTQIA+ people in the science of food.

“So often, individuals who identify as LGBTQIA+ do not feel like they can bring this monumental aspect of their lives into their careers,” added Dr. Matt Teegarden, chair of the Proud Resource Group. “I am ecstatic that IFT is taking this step to provide a safe space where people can bring their true selves to the science of food profession.”

A senior researcher at The Ohio State University and former president of the IFT Student Association, Dr. Teegarden shared his own experiences working in the science of food as a gay man in this digital exclusive from the editors of Food Technology.
