CHICAGO – June 20, 2024 – The Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), a nonprofit scientific organization committed to advancing the science of food and its application across the global food system, is pleased to announce that Martin Wiedmann, PhD, Gellert Family Professor of Food Safety at Cornell University, has been awarded IFT’s Achievements in Microbial Research for Food Safety Award in honor of Gerhard J. Haas, which recognizes an IFT member who has demonstrated innovative research in microbial aspects of food safety assurance.
To be considered for this award, which is presented in partnership with the Gerhard J. Haas Endowment Fund of Feeding Tomorrow, individuals must be directly involved with microbial food safety research, and their research outcomes must demonstrate positive impact and advance the public safety of the food supply.
Wiedmann will be honored at the Awards Ceremony & Reception at IFT FIRST: Annual Event and Expo, which is being held July 14-17, 2024, at McCormick Place in Chicago.
Wiedmann joined Cornell University in 2005, where he serves as the Gellert Family Professor in Food Safety. His research focuses on the biology of foodborne and zoonotic pathogens. He also serves as the Co-Director of the New York State Integrated Food Safety Center of Excellence. His team has published over 450 papers that have been cited more than 35,000 times. Wiedmann has received many awards throughout his career, including the International Dairy Food Association’s Food Safety Leadership Award and the International Life Science Institute’s North America Future Leaders Award.
Wiedmann received his Veterinary Degree and Dr. med. vet from the Ludwig Maximillian University of Munich in Munich, Germany, before receiving his PhD in Food Science and Technology from Cornell University. He is a member of IFT’s Western New York Section and Food Microbiology Division and resides in Ithaca, New York.
