Sabin joins NAREEE advisory board; Babbush, Musumeci earn scholarships; Weaver wins Tanner Lecture Award

IFT to hold nanoscience event
Global experts from around the world will present insights about the field of nanoscience at the Institute of Food Technologists 6th Annual International Food Nanoscience Conference July 12–13, in Chicago, Ill.

Attendees will learn about the current and emerging nanoscience applications for sustainability, nutrition, flavors, food processing and engineering, and more; the evaluation of the safety of nanomaterials; non-U.S. perspectives on nanotechnology; and consumer perceptions and education.

A primer workshop designed to help expand or refresh understanding of nanoscience will be held the morning of July 12, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., just prior to the conference. The content presented at this workshop will be helpful to participants in the conference.

Sabin joins NAREEE advisory board
The U.S. Dept. of Agriculture has appointed Julia Sabin, Vice President of J.M. Smucker, to serve on the National Agricultural Research, Extension, Education, and Economics Advisory Board.

Sabin, a Professional Member of IFT, was specifically appointed to the category of food and fiber processors. She and 24 other members of the board will provide advice based on sound science to the Secretary of Agriculture and land-grant colleges and universities on food and agricultural research, education, extension, and economics. Each member represents a specific category of U.S. agricultural stakeholders in food, fiber, and agriculture, and they have diverse expertise and professional experience.

Babbush, Musumeci earn scholarships
Two IFT student members have won scholarships from the Women in Flavor & Fragrance Commerce (WFFC).

Kayla Babbush, a student at Cornell University, is the recipient of the WFFC Flavor Scholarship Award. She is working toward her B.S. degree in food science and is focused on safety and contamination to prevent foodborne illnesses.

Lauren Musumeci has won the 2013 Rita Flynn Memorial Fragrance Scholarship Award. She is a graduate student at Cornell University and also works to encourage young women to pursue careers in science, mathematics, and engineering.

Weaver wins Tanner Lecture Award
Connie M. Weaver, Distinguished Professor and Head of the Dept. of Nutrition Science at Purdue University, is the 51st Fred W. Tanner Lecture Award winner. As part of the honor, she presented the Tanner Lecture, “Translating Nutrition Science to Dietary Guidelines.”

Weaver has shared her expertise in nutritional science with a number of different organizations over the years, including the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies, of which she is a member of the Food and Nutrition Board; National Institutes of Health (NIH)- funded Indiana Clinical and Translational
Science Institute, which she became Deputy Director of in 2008; and American Society for Nutritional Sciences, of which she is a past president. She is currently on the board of trustees of the International Life Science Institute and National Osteoporosis Foundation, and the Science Advisory Board of Pharmavite.

From 2000 to 2010, Weaver served as Director of the NIH Purdue-UAB Botanical Research Center, where she studied the effects of dietary supplements containing polyphenolics on age-related diseases. She has won numerous awards for her research efforts and has published more than 260 research articles. She received B.S. and M.S. degrees in food science and human nutrition from Oregon State University and a Ph.D. degree in food science and human nutrition from Florida State University. Weaver is a Professional Member of IFT.

The Tanner Lecture is named for Fred Wilbur Tanner, a food scientist and microbiologist who served in the founding of IFT and was the founder and one of the first editors for the scientific journal Food Research, now called the Journal of Food Science. He served as IFT President in 1945–1946. The Chicago Section of IFT established the Fred W. Tanner Lectureship in 1960.
