Program Description


Entrance Requirements: 4-year undergraduate degree, or its academic equivalent from a recognized university. GPA of 3.3 in the last two years (*60) of undergraduate (or graduate) work for the Mag, Meng or MSc degrees; GPA of 3.5 in the last two years (*60) of undergraduate work for the PhD degree. English Language Assessment Score: TOEFL (minimum score 550 paper; 213 computer or 88 internet, with no score less than 20); IELTS (minimum score 6.5 with no score less than 5.0 on any one band); MELAB (mimimum score 85).


Program of Study: Food Science and Technology research areas include: Analytical Lipid Chemistry, Cereals, Fats and Oils, Dairy Science, Fermentation and Bio/Food Engineering, Food Microbiology, Food Microbiology and Probiotics, Food Processing and Quality, Protein Chemistry - Egg, Rheology, Materials Science, Food Physics, Sensory Science and Postharvest Physiology .

Graduate Requirements: M.Ag., and M.Eng. requires 24 course based credits, M.Sc. and Ph.D. require 9 course based credits and preparation of a thesis.

Nutrition and Metabolism Research Areas Include: Clinical Nutrition Community Nutrition, Human Nutrition, Nutrition, Nutrition and Metabolism.

Statement of Costs: Tuition for Canadian students is approximately $4,249.00; tuition for International students is approximately $7,840.00. There is a $100 fee for application.

Availability of Financial Aid: Teaching and research assistantships are available on a competitive basis.

Unique Capabilities: The department encompasses excellent research facilities for the testing of sensory aspects of food, and for conducting human metabolism studies and small animal research. These facilities include: Food Laboratories, Test Kitchens, Metabolic Research Unit (Kitchen/Dining Room), Computerized Sensory Panel rooms, Food Quality Labs, Analytical Labs, Radioisotope Laboratory, Small Animal Rooms and Feed Mixing Room.

The Laboratories are well-equipped with instrumentation for the evaluation of food quality and for biochemical assay and analyses. A feed microbiological laboratory is fully accessible. Microcomputers connected to the Departmental Service, University systems and the Internet are available.
