The Advanced Model 4250 Cryoscope uses state-of-the-art electronic technologies for the determination of added water in milk, and the mid-infrared LactoScope rapidly analyzes dairy products for fat, protein, lactose, and total solids content.

Alpha-M.O.S., Hanover, Md. (alpha-mos.com), exhibited its instruments and services for sensory analysis, among them the Heracles electronic nose and ultra-fast gas chromatograph and the Astree electronic tongue, and discussed their applications.

Ametek Petrolab, Broken Arrow, Okla. (petrolab.com), a first-time exhibitor, showcased the Grabner MINIFLASH Touch portable tester for flashpoint testing of flavors and fragrances. The analyzer requires only 1 mL of sample and features a touch-screen design, intuitive menu navigation, and full remote operation. The graphics allow users to follow every millisecond of the flash combustion.

ANKOM Technology, Macedon, N.Y. (ankom.com), exhibited its analytical instrumentation for food and feed testing, including the automated TDF dietary fiber analyzer, RF gas production analyzer, XT15 fat extractor, and A2000 fiber analyzer.

Anton Paar USA, Ashland, Va. (anton-paar.com), described its viscometers, rheometers, polarimeters, refractometers, and instruments for X-ray structure analysis and microwave synthesis/decomposition.

Arizona Instrument, Chandler, Ariz. (azic.com), showcased its Computrac MAX 4000XL, which features glass-free, rapid loss-on-drying technology and improves the ability to monitor processes while minimizing waste, energy, and time.

Bellingham + Stanley, Suwanee, Ga. (bellinghamandstanley.com), exhibited its new RFM960-C Peltier temperature-controlled refractometer and ADP600 Peltier-controlled polarimeter for measuring blend ratios and purity of sugars.

Brimrose Corp. of America, Sparks, Md. (brimrose.com), introduced its Luminar 4070 miniature free-space AOTF-NIR process analyzer for non-contact, nondestructive measurements of the chemical and physical properties of powders, solids, gels, etc., in diffuse reflectance mode.

Brookfield Engineering Laboratories, Middleboro, Mass. (brookfieldengineering.com), exhibited its DV3T touch-screen rheometer/viscometer for measuring viscosity and yield stress, CT-3 texture analyzer, and Powder Flow Tester and introduced its DV1 continuous-sensing digital viscometer with new design and enhanced user interface.

CEM Corp., Matthews, N.C. (cem.com), showcased its HYBRID Trac analyzer that combines the company’s microwave moisture analyzer with a second-generation NMR system to provide fast, accurate measurement of moisture and fat content in a wide variety of wet and dry products. The instrument can switch from analyzing samples with more than 12% moisture to samples containing 12% or less moisture. The company also exhibited its fully automated Sprint Rapid Protein analyzer that directly analyzes protein, not nitrogen, removing the issue of adulterants and other interferences.

C.W. Brabender Instruments, Hackensack, N.J. (cwbrabender.com), exhibited its 12-, 16-, and 20-mm twin-screw extruders with clamshell barrels and segmented screws and described its instruments and equipment for testing material quality and physical characteristics.

Decagon Devices, Pullman, Wash. (aqualab.com), exhibited its TrueDry CV9 multi-sample moisture content analyzer, which measures the moisture content of nine samples at a time in four minutes. It dries samples at low temperatures, preventing the loss of materials other than water, and it controls vapor pressure by bringing each sample to a standard 1% relative humidity. The instrument was one of four winners of the 2015 IFT Food Expo Innovation Awards. The company also exhibited its Vapor Sorption Analyzer, which generates moisture sorption isotherms, and Lumitester PD3 Bioluminescence Monitor for detection of surface contamination by testing for the presence of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and adenosine monophosphate.

elementar Americas, Mt. Laurel, N.J. (elementaramericas.com), showcased its new protein analyzers, the rapid MAX N exceed and rapid N exceed, which utilize the Dumas method for protein determination. The instruments use prepacked reduction columns. The rapid N exceed utilizes carbon dioxide as the carrier gas instead of more-expensive helium, and the rapid MAX N exceed utilizes argon as the carrier gas.

FOSS, Eden Prairie, Minn. (fossna.com), introduced its MilkoScan Mars instrument that includes ready-made calibrations for milk and cream.

IFT15 attendees browse Hanna Instruments’ devices.Hanna Instruments, Woonsocket, R.I. (hannainst.com), demonstrated its new benchtop HI5222 pH/mV(ORP)/ISE and temperature dual-channel meter and Bluetooth pH electrode. Data can be easily transferred from the meter to a computer or iPad by Bluetooth Smart technology, transforming it into a full-featured pH meter.

HORIBA Instruments, Edison, N.J. (horibalab.com), exhibited its particle size and shape analyzers and compact meters for solid, powder, and liquid samples.

HunterLab, Reston, Va. (hunterlab.com), demonstrated its new D25NC colorimeter, which provides non-contact measurement of large surface areas. Using its automated turntable, the instrument takes 25 measurements per second and averages the results.

Industrial Test Systems, Rock Hill, S.C. (sensafe.com), exhibited its eXact iDip waterproof handheld photometer that pairs directly with a smartphone/tablet by Bluetooth Smart technology. It can test more than 35 water quality parameters through a simple four-step process.

Intelligent Sensor Technology, Torrance, Calif. (higuchi-inc.co.jp/e/pharma/analysis/taste/index.html), introduced its Calorie Answer system for measuring calorie content of a product without knowledge of its ingredients. Using NIR technology, the non-destructive and non-contact system measures calorie content and other nutrient values of foods and beverages in minutes.

Konica Minolta Sensing Americas, Ramsey, N.J. (sensing.konicaminolta.us), described its color measurement instruments and software.

Microtrac, Montgomeryville, Pa. (microtrac.com), highlighted its Bluewave laser-diffraction particle-size analyzer, which uses blue laser diodes for measuring dry powders and wet suspensions and is said to be ideal for multi-mode distributions that consist of nanoparticles and micron-sized particles, and the PartAn 3D analyzer, which uses high-speed, high-resolution cameras to capture multiple pictures of a single particle’s orientation, enabling accurate measurement of length, width, and thickness.

Nippon Instruments North America, College Station, Texas (hg-nic.us), a first-time exhibitor, show-cased its line of mercury analyzers for automated analysis of solid, liquid, and gaseous samples and its automated digestion systems, portable field analyzers, and online processing units.

One Resonance Sensors, San Diego, Calif. (detect-ors.com), exhibited its MobiLab 130 portable elemental analyzer, which measures sodium concentrations from 30 ppm to saturation across a broad spectrum of food products in one minute. The instrument is not affected by sample clarity or color or the presence of other ions.

The Atago RePo-4 Honey Total Analysis ModelPaul N. Gardner Co., Pompano Beach, Fla. (gardco.com), showcased the Atago Refractometer Polarimeter and its use in honey analysis. In addition to angle of rotation and Brix, the portable RePo-4 Honey meter displays the percentage of fructose and moisture in honey and the temperature.

Process Sensors Corp., Milford, Mass. (processsensors.com), highlighted its MCT466-SF moisture gauge system and MCT466-QC QuikCheck Moisture and Oil Tester. The MCT466-SF is designed for use in food processing environments, and the MCT 466-QC is designed for near-line or laboratory use.

Stable Micro Systems, Surrey, England (stablemicrosystems.com), announced the launch of its Dynamic Integrated Balance for use with its TA.XTplus texture analyzer. The accessory enables users to measure an additional parameter during standard force measurement tests. The company also launched a suite of egg testing tools to use with its TA.XT Express texture analyzer.

Surface Measurement Systems, Allentown, Pa. (surfacemeasurementsystems.com), exhibited its DVS Intrinsic gravimetric water sorption instrument, which automatically records organic and water sorption isotherms, and iGC Surface Energy Analyzer.

Texture Technologies Corp., Hamilton, Mass. (texturetechnologies.com), exhibited its TA.XTPlus texture analyzers, which measure hardness, adhesiveness, cohesiveness, resilience, and other attributes of foods, and VolScan Profiler, a benchtop, laser-based scanner that measures the outside profile of bread and other bakery products and calculates the volume.

Waters Corp., Milford, Mass. (waters.com), exhibited its new ACQUITY ultra-high-performance liquid chromatograph, which allows users to switch between HPLC and UHPLC separations at the flip of a switch.

YSI Life Sciences, Yellow Springs, Ohio (ysilifesciences.com), a first-time exhibitor, showcased its YSI 2900 automated chemical analyzer, which can measure samples from a variety of sample holders, including 96-well plates and microcentrifuge tubes, and the YSI 2950D biochemistry analyzer, which features up to three biosensor modules and measures up to six parameters.

Bahnson Environmental Specialties, Raleigh, N.C. (eschambers.com), described its ES2000 Reach-In line of controlled environmental chambers for product shelf-life and other studies.

BINDER, Bohemia, N.Y. (binder-world.com/us), showcased its KBF Series testing chambers for long-term storage, shelf-life, and refrigeration testing. The systems measure temperatures from 0°C to 70°C without humidity and 10°C to 70°C with humidity and humidity ranges from 10% to 80%.

BMT USA, Monroe, Wash. (bmtus.com), introduced its Climacell EVO forced-air stability chamber, which features adjustable temperature, humidity, lighting, carbon dioxide, and sterilization settings, and Friocell EVO incubator, which features a double-chamber design with a removable inner chamber for sterilization in an autoclave or easy cleaning and decontamination by hand.

Meritech, Golden, Colo. (meritech.com), exhibited its new CleanTech 2000SCA automated hand-washing system that removes 99.98% of pathogens from skin or gloved hands. The turnstile entry automatically opens at the end of each 12-second wash-and-rinse cycle. The system takes less than half the time of a manual wash, uses 75% less water and soap, and produces less discharge waste.

OHAUS Corp., Parsippany, N.J. (ohaus.com), showcased its Starter series of water analysis meters for the testing of pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, oxidation-reduction potential, salinity, and total dissolved solids. The meters are available in benchtop, portable, and pen versions.

Miniature Equipment
An Armfield representative conducts a demonstration.Armfield, Clarksburg, N.J. (explorearmfield.com), exhibited its miniature-scale research and development systems, including its new FT102LT Carbonator Filler, which has a product capacity of 15 liters, can fill up to 60 two-liter bottles per hour, and can accommodate cans and bottles. The company also introduced its new FT17 Cross Flow Membrane Filtration system for evaluating membranes in cross-flow applications and FT140 Mixing Vessels designed for formulation and storage.

Dixie Canner Co., Athens, Ga. (dixiecanner.com), showcased its Model UVGMD-ALCC Double Seamer, a semiautomatic unit that features touch-screen control and four operating modes. It also exhibited other lab and pilot-scale equipment, including can seamers, retorts, and steam blanchers.

Membrane Specialists, Hamilton, Ohio (membranespecialists.com), introduced its new benchtop filtration pilot plant for investigational and process-development projects. It is designed to accommodate a broad range of tubular, spiral, hollow fiber, and ceramic membranes and can attain the flows and pressures required for reverse osmosis, nanofiltration, ultrafiltration, and microfiltration. Larger pilot plants are also available and can be customized.

MicroThermics, Raleigh, N.C. (microthermics.com), announced its newest addition to its small-scale UHT/HTST and aseptic food processing equipment, the Aseptia microwave processor. The processor, developed by Aseptia Inc., provides rapid, controlled heating without fouling. Aseptia was one of four winners of IFT’s 2015 IFT Food Expo Innovation Awards and together with North Carolina State University’s Dept. of Food, Bioprocessing, and Nutrition Sciences received IFT’s 2015 Food Technology Industrial Achievement Award for the development and commercialization of shelf-stable products using microwave-assisted aseptic processing.

OMVE, Swedesboro, N.J. (omve.com), showcased its CF121 Bench-Top Carbo-Fill carbonator, which uses a specially designed saturation technique that enables fast and equal absorption of carbon dioxide.

Tangent Membranes, Grass Valley, Calif. (tangentmembranes.com), a first-time exhibitor, showcased its XF Mini filtration system, which can operate up to 150 psi for use with microfiltration and ultrafiltration membranes, and the RO Mini filtration system, which can operate up to 1,000 psi, utilizing nanofiltration and reverse osmosis.

Diagnostic Kits
bioMerieux, St. Louis, Mo. (biomerieux-usa.com,) exhibited its diagnostic testing products, including VIDAS for pathogen detection, VITEK and chromID for bacterial identification, LABGUARD for environmental monitoring, and D-Count and BacT/ALERT for in-process control-and-release testing. The company also exhibited its Dilumat food sample diluters and Smasher sample blender.

Crystal Chem, Downers Grove, Ill. (crystalchem.com), exhibited the kits manufactured by Morinaga Institute for recovery and detection of allergens in both raw and processed foods. The ELISA and lateral-flow kits include new ones for soy and gluten as well as others for egg, milk, and peanut.

ELISA Technologies, Gainesville, Fla. (elisa-tek.com), described its food and feed immunoassays, including the ELISA-TEK Meat Species identification test kits for raw and cooked meats, the Aller-Tek Gluten ELISA, the EZ Gluten rapid lateral-flow assay, and others.

Hygiena, Camarillo, Calif. (hygiena.com), introduced its AllerFlow Gluten and InSite Salmonella tests and other hygiene-monitoring products used to validate sanitation protocols, ensure that HACCP regulations are met, show due diligence to auditors, and quickly determine whether machines are clean enough to process food.

LaMotte Co., Chestertown, Md. (lamotte.com), exhibited its line of water analysis field kits and meters. The kits determine chlorine, peracetic acid, copper, alkalinity, hardness, and others. The meters include single- and multi-wavelength colorimeters and meters to determine pH/ISE, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, and total dissolved solids/conductivity.

Neogen Corp., Lansing, Mich. (neogen.com), exhibited its new AccuPoint Advanced ATP system for hygiene/sanitation monitoring; Soleris and BioLumix rapid media-based indicator/spoilage organism tests; NeoFilm test for detection and quantification of organisms in environmental samples, process material, and finished product; Reveal 3-D strip tests for detection of trace levels of specific food allergens; Veratox quantitative food allergen tests; and ANSR system that combines a lateral-flow immunoassay with chromatography for a rapid one-step detection of Salmonella, Listeria spp., or Listeria monocytogenes DNA. The company also offers a rapid laboratory testing service at its locations in Lansing, Mich., and Ayr, Scotland.

Primerdesign, Southampton, England (genesig.com), a first-time exhibitor, showcased its genesig line of qPCR detection kits and reagents for foodborne pathogen testing, meat speciation, allergen testing, and water testing for contaminants.

VICAM, Milford, Mass. (vicam.com), described its new AflaCheck qualitative strip test and Afla-V quantitative strip test for the detection of aflatoxins. The tests are used in conjunction with the company’s Vertu Lateral Flow Reader. The company also exhibited its new Myco6in1+ affinity columns for LC/ MS/MS that provide simultaneous determination of aflatoxins, ochratoxin A, fumonisins, deoxynivalenol, zearalenone, and T-2 and HT-2 toxins.

Food Allergy Research & Resource Program (FARRP), Lincoln, Neb. (farrp.org), described its products and services regarding allergenic foods and ingredients, including analysis, training, workshops, risk assessment, and consultation. The Food Allergen Handbook prepared by Neogen Corp. in cooperation with FARRP describes the tests available for detecting allergens. FARRP’s director, Steve Taylor, won this year’s IFT Nicholas Appert Award for his comprehensive investigative work on food allergens and said that FARRP is working on developing mass spectrometry as a confirmation method for the presence of allergens.

Glycemic Index Laboratories, Toronto, Ontario (gilabs.com), discussed its clinical testing services for satiety assessment, markers of metabolism analysis, glycemic index determination, continuous blood glucose monitoring, and long-term trials on weight loss, cardiovascular disease risk factors, natural health products, and novel fibers.

Institute for Food Safety and Health, Chicago, Ill. (iit.edu/ifsh), described its new Food Safety Innovation Center, which will open later this year as an interactive workshop environment to serve the needs of small and medium-size food processors. The institute also announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration had accepted its process filing for a pressure-enhanced sterilization process for commercial production of complex particulate-bearing shelf-stable low-acid foods. The process provides commercial sterility using lower time and temperature conditions than those used in conventional thermal sterilization.

CfPA – Center for Professional Advancement, East Brunswick, N.J. (cfpa.com), a first-time exhibitor, offered accredited technical training on such topics as research and development, processing techniques, regulations, labeling, packaging, and formulation. The courses are offered in person, at client sites, and online.

Cornell Institute for Food Systems Industry Partnership Program, Ithaca, N.Y. (ipp.cifs.cornell.edu), a first-time exhibitor, described itself as a public-private partnership that engages Cornell University faculty and staff with industry scientists, engineers, and business leaders throughout the food system to find solutions to food system challenges.

Dynalab Corp., Rochester, N.Y. (dynalabcorp.com), introduced its Close-it self-adhesive labels and Seal-it tamper-proof security seals. The Close-it label hermetically seals a container hole after a sample has been taken and can be written on to provide quality control information. The Seal-it label cannot be removed without being torn or destroyed, thus providing evidence of tampering. It can be written on and provides a unique ID number and a peel-off control label that can be applied to accompanying documents.

The ready-to-use, two-step product cleans and sanitizes with no rinsing required. Designed for dry and low-moisture processing environments, it reduces cleaning time by 30% by eliminating the use of rinse water between cleaning and sanitizing and provides equivalent performance to traditional wet cleaning methods.

ESHA Research, Salem, Ore. (esha.com), described its software programs and databases for nutrient analysis, labeling, and product development as well as regulatory compliance consulting and label-generation services.

Nasco Whirl-Pak, Fort Atkinson, Wis. (whirl-pak.com), displayed Whirl-Pak sterile laboratory sample bags for transporting samples for QA testing, product analysis, and other laboratory applications.

Radio Frequency Co., Millis, Mass. (radiofrequency.com), described its Macrowave pasteurization system, which operates at a frequency of 40 MHz where the depth of penetration and uniformity of heating are optimized, ensuring effective microbe kill while avoiding the deleterious effects from prolonged exposure to high temperatures.
