Since its inception in 1939, IFT has experienced many changes within its membership and the broader
science of food community. Our longtime members often tell us that throughout their careers, they
have seen a gradual shift which has brought more diversity to their workplaces and the association.
To gain a better understanding of the diverse backgrounds, experiences, and needs our members bring
to the organization and profession, IFT began collecting enhanced data regarding demographic
characteristics in 2019. The information gained helps us create data-informed diversity, equity, and
inclusion strategies, address barriers that specific groups of people are experiencing, track our progress,
chart our growth, and transparently report the impact of our value of Inclusion.
