RESEARCH

Consumers Want More Minerals

Only 40% of the respondents to a survey conducted by Jungbunzlauer in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany think that their mineral supply is sufficient to cover their needs. And that translates to a market opportunity for products that are high in mineral content, according to Jungbunzlauer, which embarked on the research in an effort delve into consumers’ perceptions of and preferences for minerals in supplements, fortified beverages, and food.

Consumers have only limited knowledge of the health benefits of minerals, the survey showed. For that reason, Jungbunzlauer recommends educating consumers by adding health claims on fortified products.

The study’s authors caution against overloading consumers with too much information and note that most are not aware of the specific characteristics of compounds and the differences among them.

Rather than communicating very specific information, companies might consider using the phrase “organic minerals” because consumers perceive that description positively, Jungbunzlauer notes. In addition, the company says that rather than using a technical term like “bioavailability” when describing the advantages of organic minerals, marketers should consider using simple descriptors such as “minerals that can be easily absorbed.”

ChickP 90% protein isolate is neutral in taste, nutritious, and highly functional in a variety of product categories, says ChickP CEO Liat Lachish Levy, who showcased several applications of the chickpea-based ingredient at IFT FIRST.

Founded in 2016 by pediatrician and human nutrition professor Ram Reifen, whose research into chickpeas was driven by a goal of addressing protein shortages in developing countries, ChickP uses a proprietary extraction process to ensure the purity of the protein and remove bitterness.

“We do feel the nondairy category really showcases the potential of 90% isolate,” says Levy. ChickP protein powder’s unique functional characteristics include foaming capabilities that make it optimal for use by baristas seeking to serve up cappuccinos made without dairy ingredients, she notes. Other potential applications include pastries, snacks, and cereals.

A four-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled human clinical study showed Taiyo’s low-dose MorActive effectively relieved lower back discomfort among healthy adults. MorActive derives its benefits from the moringa plant’s glucosinolate-rich seeds, which are then standardized to 20% glucomoringin. Glucomoringin is converted in the body to moringin, which has been shown to be a very effective and potent antagonist of TRPA1, an ion channel known as a sensor for aches. MorActive works by desensitizing the nerves and receptors associated with back discomfort. MorActive is part of an exclusive portfolio of proprietary ingredients from NutriScience Innovations LLC and partner Taiyo International.
