Change is constant throughout every industry and presents both challenges and opportunities. We’ve all experienced moments when we are forced to adapt, shift our perspectives, and find new approaches to solve problems. For the IFT community, and every member of the food system, we have arrived at one of those times—a tipping point.

Malcolm Gladwell, who spoke at IFT’s Annual Meeting in 2005, describes in his book The Tipping Point that moments such as these occur when small shifts gain enough momentum to become mainstream. “Ideas, messages, behaviors, and products can spread through a population in a social epidemic in the same way that viruses spread.”

Within the food system, we’re seeing increasing scrutiny of ultra-processed foods, heightened attention on health and nutrition, and rapidly changing regulations that can, for many, feel like a seismic shift. Not only that, but recent structural and policy changes, including the loss of research funding, staff reductions, and the elimination of vital committees, have significantly impacted many within our community. And while this is a time for us to rise to the new challenges and evolve, as Gladwell said in 2005, “The gift that brings innovation—that brings new ideas—is enormously fragile ... and we need to do whatever it takes to keep this quality alive.”

This is why the IFT community is more important than ever.

Facing these tipping points requires more than just awareness—it calls for a strong, connected community. IFT has long been a convener, bringing together professionals and students from all aspects of the food system and providing support to navigate complexity and change. In times of disruption, our diverse network creates stability, guidance, and forward-thinking solutions.

IFT is a place where our members can build lasting connections to call on when times are good or when times are tough.

IFT is a place where our members can build lasting connections to call on when times are good or when times are tough. And as IFT CEO Christie Tarantino-Dean mentioned in her February letter to members, although we navigate some unique headwinds, as an association we’re working to find new ways to bring our community together.

I encourage you to take an active role in IFT’s Divisions, Sections, and Member Resource Groups. These communities provide invaluable opportunities for collaboration and professional growth. And if financial uncertainty is a barrier, our member dues support program provides financial support for membership dues. And for those whose career is facing uncertainty, visit the Career Center where we have leveraged our network of recruiters and career coaches to supplement the available resources.

In addition to member support, IFT continues our commitment to ensuring that science remains at the forefront of policy decisions. Our advocacy priorities remain securing research funding, elevating food science in key global issues, and ensuring IFT members have a voice in shaping the future of food. Reiterating information provided by IFT Chief Science & Technology Officer Bryan Hitchcock on IFT Connect, his team is actively advocating and educating at key global events and spending time on Capitol Hill meeting with Senate staffers, highlighting IFT advocacy priorities, and stressing the need for increased agrifood research funding and representation of scientific expertise on critical forums.

Our media engagement is also an important component of our advocacy efforts as we work against misinformation about the food system and foster trust in the scientific process. This work is vital—not just for our members but for the entire food system that relies on sound science to move forward.

Change always brings uncertainty, but it also brings opportunity. Today, we are witnessing an unprecedented level of interest in food and food science. This presents a chance for us to continue to highlight the expertise housed within IFT and for the food system community to step forward and shape the future.

At IFT, championing science in food has always been our core mission. Since our founding, we have guided the industry through critical transitions by advocating for science, fostering collaboration, and driving innovation.

The road ahead may be uncertain, but one thing is clear: By working together, leveraging science, and staying connected, we can ensure that this tipping point leads to meaningful and positive progress for the food system all across the world.ft
