Cornell University’s Carmen I. Moraru Honored with IFT’s Collaborative Research Grant to Help Improve Food Quality

The Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) is pleased to announce that Carmen I. Moraru, PhD, Professor at Cornell University, has been awarded IFT’s Collaborative Research Grant in honor of Marcel Loncin, which provides research funding for a scientist or engineer conducting basic chemistry/physics/engineering research applied to food processing and improvement of food quality.

CHICAGO – July 9, 2024 – The Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), a nonprofit scientific organization committed to advancing the science of food and its application across the global food system, is pleased to announce that Carmen I. Moraru, PhD, Professor at Cornell University, has been awarded IFT’s Collaborative Research Grant in honor of Marcel Loncin, which provides research funding for a scientist or engineer conducting basic chemistry/physics/engineering research applied to food processing and improvement of food quality.

The grant provides $50,000 for the recipient to direct and carry out a proposed research project. Moraru will be honored at the Awards Ceremony & Reception at IFT FIRST: Annual Event and Expo, which is being held July 14-17, 2024, at McCormick Place in Chicago.

Moraru joined Cornell University in 2003, where she serves as a Professor in the Department of Food Science. Her research focuses on physical and engineering properties of foods, food and dairy processing, and food safety engineering. Previously, she was a Research Assistant Professor at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. She has received several awards, including the Cornell CALS Alumni Association Outstanding Faculty Award, the SUNY Chancellor’s Excellence in Teaching award, and the International Dairy Foods Association’s Teaching Award in Dairy Manufacturing. In addition to receiving IFT’s Collaborative Research Grant, she is an IFT Fellow.

Moraru received her undergraduate degree and PhD, both in Food Engineering, from Dunarea de Jos University of Galați in Galați, Romania. She is a member of the Western New York Section of IFT and resides in Ithaca, New York.
