IFT to present new webcasts
IFT is offering two new live webcasts that inform about consumer practices in home food preservation and how biotechnology is used to improve sustainability in the food value chain.

The movement to buy local and sustainably grown produce is one contributor to the resurgence of home food preservation. The webcast, “Current Science and Practice in Home Food Preservation,” presents the current science in U.S. Dept. of Agriculture home food preservation recommendations and resources available to professionals. Participants will receive science-based resources for home food preservation during the webcast, which is supported by the IFT Extension & Outreach division. It will be held on Aug. 1, 2012, from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m CDT.

Learn to take a life-cycle approach to environmental and sustainability issues and to understand how biotechnology can contribute to improving lives in “Improving Sustainability across the Food Value Chain with Biotechnology.” This webcast will focus on the use of agriculture techniques and technologies to increase yield and reduce farm inputs, innovations in animal feed that reduce nutrient runoff, and improvements that help reduce food waste and energy used in distribution. It will be held on Aug. 7, 2012, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. CDT.

Save the Date
Mark your calendars and plan to attend two upcoming IFT events.

Food Policy Impact is a one-day conference that will present information about both current and emerging food policy and how to comply with regulations. Government officials who develop policy and guidance documentation will update attendees about food laws and how they affect the industry. In addition to this opportunity to hear from government representatives, attendees will learn about global food policy standards and hear commentary around the Food Safety Modernization Act rulemaking.

A two-day short course, “Labeling Requirements and Implications for Foods Marketed in the U.S.,” will take place on Dec. 4–5, 2012, and the conference will be held on Dec. 6 in Arlington, Va. For more information, visit www.ift.org/foodpolicyimpact.

Wellness 13 presents the latest advances in the healthful foods arena and how to successfully develop and market healthful foods that appeal to consumers. Attendees will learn about the latest advances in healthful food products, how to provide added functionality to consumers, what directions to take to market effectively and ethically, and about policy adherence.

Short courses will take place on March 25–26, 2013, and the conference will take place on March 27–28 in Rosemont, Ill. The call for proposals for Wellness 13 is currently open. For more information, visit www.ift.org/wellness.
